Choose one option

Built on a wide shared group of compulsory classes, the Bachelors programme in law includes, from the 2nd year onwards, four options:

  • Option Law,
  • Option Criminology,
  • Option Political Science
  • Option European and International Law (Maastricht)

All the options grant direct access to the Master in Law. Students who do not have taken the "Law Option" and who follow the Master in Law will be obliged to include the following course on their programme : Intellectual law.

The Political Science option allows for direct access to the Masters in Political Science with a professional focus on European Policy and Public Administration, on the condition that it was followed in the 2nd and 3rd year of the Bachelors.

The Criminology option followed in the 2nd and 3rd year of the Bachelors allows students to directly access the Masters in Criminology. Nevertheless, some classes will be added to replace the 'Criminal Law' class. These classes will be determined depending on each student's background.

Returning to the option Law or Maastricht in the 3rd year of bachelor is always possible. For the other options, the agreement of the faculty is required.

It is advised that students wishing to apply for the Masters in Law with a professional focus in management contact the Dean's Secretariat

Practice more foreign languages ?

During the five-year programme of the bachelor and the master in law, students will therefore follow a course in a foreign language each year (language course in the 1st year, legal terminology course in the 2nd year, and law course given in a foreign language starting at the 3rd year of the bachelor), chosen between English, Dutch and German.

From the academic year 2016-2017, the bachelor in law will allow students to develop the additional skill of reading texts drafted in a second foreign language other than French; this second foreign language must be Dutch if the student has not chosen Dutch for courses of Legal Terminology in the 2nd year.

Preparation for the third year of the Bachelor at the Université of Ghent

The Faculty offers the students of the "Law" option the opportunity to make their 3rd year of Bachelor in Law at the University of Ghent as an "Erasmus Belgica". As seating is limited, a selection will be organized in the 2nd year of Bachelor during the first week of school.

Students selected in this way will follow, from the second year, an individual programme including in particular compulsory classes from the 3rd year which cannot be followed at the University of Gand. They must enrol for classes in [i[Legal terminology[/] and analysis of texts in Dutch.
