Course contents :
|
| The course consists of examining in class law texts written in German. These texts, which will be distributed during the course, are mainly composed of Belgian and international judgements, official documents and extracts from periodicals. |

Learning outcomes of the course :
|
| The primary objective of the course is to stimulate students' interest in German law and to allow them to master the subject. At the end of the course students will be able to read and understand law texts written in German.
It needs to be stressed that this is not a language course, and to that extent does not entail the study of German grammar, etc. Where gaps exist in a student's knowledge it is up to him or her to fill them. |

| As indicated earlier the texts to be studied will be distributed in class. There is no specified reference work, but students are advised to buy a good German-French dictionary. However the acquisition of a German-French law dictionary is not necessary, and such dictionaries are available in the library.
Students are moreover asked to learn the German legal vocabulary required for magistrates who wish to demonstrate their knowledge of German to pass a test at Selor. This vocabulary appears in the "2011 Syllabus - Magistratur Deutsch" available for free on Selor's website at:

Assessment methods and criteria :
|
| Evaluation in the first session takes the form of a written exam of two hours.
Students will be asked to translate two extracts from law texts, each of around 20 lines. Only the first will have already been seen in class, whilst the second will deal with a subject raised in class.
In addition to these translations, the students will be asked to translate 20 legal terms (always passive, i.e., from German to French) that appear in the Selor syllabus "2011 Syllabus - Magistratur Deutsch", available for free from the Selor website (see above).
Evaluation in the second session follows the same form as in the first. |

| The course takes place in the 2nd quadrimester.
Participation in the course is obviously desirable, as it will take the form of interaction between teacher and students, who are encouraged to interrupt and act questions at any time. |
