Learning unit contents
The ZENS0015-1 course is aimed at prospective secondary school teachers (upper secondary level). To prepare them as effectively as possible for entry into their professional role, it aims to equip them with the ability to approach incidents they are likely to face with composure and to make a nuanced assessment of the emotional tensions that accompany such incidents.
Given the number of teaching hours allocated to it, this part of the course focuses on the analysis of real-life situations experienced by practising teachers or by trainee teachers. This analysis is supported by course materials made available to students via eCampus.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The ability to analyse a report of an incident that has occurred at school, involving a teacher and a pupil, a trainee teacher and a pupil, or two or more pupils.
This requires the ability to:
- extract facts from a report written by a serving teacher or an AESS trainee;
- characterise the teacher's emotional state (based on the theoretical concepts covered in the course, namely the theory of relational self-management - Bajoit, 2003);
- to identify what is problematic in the sequence of events;
- to identify what is problematic in the resolution of the conflict or incident;
- to suggest a resolution to the conflict or incident that complies with legal requirements and the mission of civic education;
- and, consequently, to apply the theoretical concepts and/or principles identified during the working sessions, independent study and feedback on that work.
