Learning unit contents
The French Language Proficiency course, intended for prospective teachers who have graduated from the University of Liège (S4/S5) and who did not pass the ARES external examination (EMLF), aims to improve language skills. In particular, the course seeks to raise awareness of the importance of linguistic proficiency in the school context, to review grammatical conventions, to adopt reading and writing strategies adapted to the communicative situation, and to identify the parameters of the oral dimension of teaching.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- identify the challenges associated with mastery of the French language in the school context;
- write an argumentative text appropriate to the communicative situation;
- apply reading strategies for informative and argumentative texts;
- use standard written language appropriately;
- identify language errors in students' written work;
- identify the parameters of the oral dimension of teaching.

The course is structured around thematic sessions conducted in class groups, with active interaction with students. Practical exercises (error correction, written assignments, etc.) are included. Individualized monitoring of students' writing skills will be provided by the instructor.

The examination will take the form of a written assignment in the argumentative genre. Detailed instructions will be provided during the course.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
The first class will take place during the week of 9 February 2026. It will take the form of a written diagnostic assessment.
The course will then resume during the week of 23 February 2026.
