Because the media shape public opinion, shape our vision of the world and help to construct our identity, it's up to the teacher to contribute, whatever subject he or she teaches, to shaping responsible citizens, active readers/spectators who are aware of the process by which media messages are constructed.
The Media Education course will not, however, aim to communicate a series of "pedagogical recipes" that can be applied in class, but will rather attempt to outline possible paths that open up the desire to learn about and with the media.
To this end, the course will address, among other things, the distinction between media literacy and media education, as well as a series of semiological and ideological issues inherent to media productions. It will thus offer a general introduction to the analysis of media messages (discourse, representations, materiality of media, etc.), focusing in particular on current issues.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Having acquired the rudiments of an analytical approach to media productions and various media devices, students will be in a position to take a critical yet constructive look at a range of productions that contribute to shaping the opinions and knowledge of the students they will encounter in their future profession. The aim of the Media Education course is therefore not to train media educators, but to equip future teachers of all disciplines so that they can incorporate in their professional practice an informed, resourceful and reflective view of media productions and their reception.

The course will be divided into 5 sessions, each of which will address a particular type of media. Most of the theoretical notions will be presented on the basis of media document analysis involving active participation of the students. Attendance is therefore strongly recommended.
The sessions won't be recorded (no podcast).

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
The sessions will take place on February 4, 11 and 18 from 6 to 8pm and on February 25 and March 4 from 6 to 8.30pm (Liège city center, place du XX Août) .
