Pratique de la langue anglaise

Contents: - Practical comprehension and listening exercises and note-taking based on authentic recorded material in UK English and US English. - Practical comprehension exercises in reading texts and styles with different content (press articles, short stories, novels...), summary, critical comment, lexical, grammatical and cultural tools.  - Exercises on word definition and paraphrasing - Initiation to Anglophone culture through the texts being addressed. - Study of English Vocabulary related to different areas of general knowledge

Translation of general interest texts with different levels of language, different registers and in a variety of domains. Approach to the cultural references encountered in the texts. Notions of contrastive linguistics. Initiation in the procedures and problems of translation.

Pratique de la langue anglaise

By the end of the year, students will be able to: - summarise and critically comment on texts with various styles and contents (to develop one's ability to synthesize, criticize and analyze) - define certain words from the text, find their synonyms, antonyms and summarise paragraphs. - understand authentic recorded material, pronunciation exercises. - be at ease with the Anglophone vocabulary and culture required to understand written and spoken media (history, politics, economics, a range of socio-cultural material, news, ...) -do research to understand the cultural references mentioned in the texts and listening comprehensions analyzed in class (to develop personal research skills)

At the end of the course, students will be able to translate general interest texts, i.e. analyse them and transmit and reformulate the meaning. They will be able to use basic translation tools (monolingual and bilingual dictionaries) and take into account the specificities of the source and target languages.

Good command of the English language, with the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary necessary to understand and criticize complex texts.

Participating in the organisation of debates and oral exercises in class is compulsory.

- Written preparation of the translations at home. Comparison and critical group correction of the work prepared individually.
- Mandatory study of several chapters of English vocabulary from the English vocabulary book (see required readings)

2 hours/week devoted to text analysis and audio/video content analysis on the themes discussed in class.

Two-hour lessons per week during the first Semester. Compulsory classes.
Non-mandatory learning sessions on the study of the vocabulary.

- Texts and exercises to be found online. - Listening exercises to be provided in class by the instructors. - Reading list for the June oral exam  to be provided at the beginning of the second term (from American Short Stories, 1920 to the present, Many Voices Literature, 2003)

Pratique de la langue anglaise

Assessment in January: Written exam based on the first term course content (course pack and video links). A listening comprehension exercise will be included, on the themes discussed in class during the first Semester. (40%)
Should the student fail (< 10/20), they will take the exam again (first term course content) in June.
Assessment in June: Written exam based on the second term course content (course pack and video links). A listening comprehension exercise will be included, on the themes discussed in class during the first Semester.
Oral assessment in June : Students should individually prepare the readings assigned by the instructors.
  Should the student get a mark inferior to 8/20 for one of the different skills, the final grade for all the skills will be < 10/20.

- Written exam in January, translation of a text, similar to the ones translated in class. No bilingual dictinary allowed. 
- Exam on the vocabulary from Robert et Nathan (see required readings).
