Placement

The Master's internship is a personal experience that gives students the opportunity to apply what they have learned to real-world situations by working in the field under supervision.

This internship allows students to explore various aspects of the professions that lead professionals to identify problems, implement a rigorous scientific approach, and produce relevant knowledge and concrete avenues for innovation that are useful to stakeholders in the field of educational sciences:

  • by drawing on relevant theoretical frameworks,
  • by applying one or more scientifically validated methods,
  • by taking a reflective approach to the choices made,
  • by fostering personal reflection on careers in educational research as well as on one's own role within a professional team.
The student completes his or her internship (and therefore registers for it):

  • either as part of a research team in the School of Psychology, Speech-Language Pathology, and Educational Sciences;
  • or at an institution capable of hosting an intern and offering them an activity related to careers in educational research.
An internship supervisor will be designated within the selected organization.

The internship will be guided and supervised by an academic advisor from the Department of Educational Sciences at the FPLSE (or co-supervised with an academic or researcher from another faculty or department), generally with the assistance of a teaching assistant or a doctoral student.

The academic supervisor of the internship is responsible for defining their expectations regarding the organization and educational content of the internship (prerequisites, duration, content, assessment methods, etc.) in a tripartite internship agreement, which therefore requires consultation among the student, the internship supervisor, and the academic supervisor of the internship.

Seminar

Students must attend 15 hours of compulsory "internship support seminars"

Three cross-disciplinary seminars (total: 9 hours) will be organised during the academic year. They will cover the following topics:

  • Presentation, objectives and organisation of the internship
  • The internship report: how to demonstrate the development
of skills gained during the internship in a written report?
  • Critical incidents: analysis of real-life situations
These seminars will bring together students from all three career pathways (EFE, ASC, CCD).

In addition, each academic coordinator will organise so-called 'field-specific' seminars (total: 6 hours) aimed at providing students with more specific support based on their chosen placement field. The format of these seminars may vary from one academic coordinator to another. Each academic coordinator will inform their students.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Placement

The overall objective of the internships is to enable students to integrate into a professional team whose mission is to adopt a reflective and comprehensive approach to teaching, learning, and training, as well as to generate knowledge and innovations in various fields of educational sciences. In this context, the intern may, in particular, be called upon to participate, in whole or in part, in scientific research conducted by university departments, research directors at higher education institutions, or laboratories. They may also contribute to the development of policies, programs, or assessment systems for education and training, led by organizations such as the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (FW-B), the Academy for Research and Higher Education (ARES), or the General Service for Digital Education (SGNE).

Depending on the context of the internship, students will be expected to develop skills such as:

Conceptualizing by formulating a contextualized research question, drawing on relevant theoretical frameworks, clarifying key notions and concepts, and coherently articulating research questions, objectives, hypotheses, and theoretical frameworks.

Conducting research by establishing and justifying methodological choices, conducting a targeted literature review, participating in the design and implementation of a research protocol that adheres to ethical principles and complies with the GDPR, and analyzing and interpreting results while comparing them to the scientific literature.

Disseminate knowledge or avenues for innovation that are useful to stakeholders in education and training by demonstrating the ability to synthesize information, formulating scientific conclusions and discussing them with experts and practitioners, and presenting them in writing or orally while adhering to the standards specific to the internship context.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Placement

The course "Master Thesis Preparation: Project Design and Research Ethics" (PEDA4065-1) is a prerequisite for internships.

Each internship proposal may also have its own prerequisites (see the Excel list provided by the academic advisors).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Placement

The purpose of the internship is to apply and develop skills in a professional setting. Students are therefore expected to be physically present at the internship site for at least 90 hours. However, preparatory or follow-up activities may also take place outside the internship site.

Students must attend the accompanying internship seminars concurrently with their internship period in order to integrate what they have learned in the field with the supervision sessions offered during the seminars.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Placement

Face-to-face course

Further information:

The internship will take place, for a minimum of 90 hours, directly at the workplace, with additional work to be carried out at home (or elsewhere, as agreed with the internship supervisor) in addition to these 90 hours.

Internship support seminars are held exclusively in person.

Additional information:

  • Students are required to complete a 180-hour internship, at least 90 hours of which must be spent in the field.
  • Students must complete the number of internship hours specified in the internship registration form. Credit for the number of internship hours is granted at the end of the internship based on the work actually performed and confirmed by the internship supervisor.

Course materials and recommended or required readings

Placement

Platform(s) used for course materials:
- eCampus

Further information:

Recommended reading lists may be provided by the various instructors in charge. Materials for the seminars accompanying the internship could be shared with the students.

All information will be shared via an eCampus course entitled 'Stages'

Placement

Written work / report

Further information:

The assessment will be carried out by the academic supervisor, who will base their assessment on the internship report provided by the student and take into account the assessment submitted by the internship supervisor.

In some cases, the academic supervisor may request an oral interview (a discussion about the placement report), if they so wish.

Practical details regarding the internship report will be provided during the internship support seminars.

For more information, students are also encouraged to refer to the faculty regulations.

Internships are offered only once per academic year. The grade is taken into account during the grading process for the current academic year (see Academic and Examination Regulations).
