Placement
The Master's internship is a personal experience that gives students the opportunity to apply what they have learned to real-world situations by working in the field under supervision.
This internship allows students to accompany, support, and advise practitioners (trainers, teachers, coaches, etc.) in their work and innovations with various audiences (students or adults) :
- by accurately analyzing the situations and needs underlying the request;
- by questioning the relevance of their theoretical and methodological frameworks in light of their impact, the context, and the literature;
- by identifying the conditions for a working partnership conducive to the adoption of change (by agreeing on objectives, resources, organizational arrangements, respective roles, and the rights and responsibilities of the various partners);
- if necessary, by developing relevant learning mechanisms together with the partners;
- by communicating and collaborating with various stakeholders in an appropriate, respectful, and constructive manner, depending on the context;
- by ultimately ensuring conditions that promote the well-being, development, and learning of the ultimate audience;
- by remaining mindful of the social issues specific to education and training contexts.
- either within the School of Psychology, Speech-Language Pathology, and Educational Sciences;
- or at an institution or organization that can accommodate (at least) one student and offer them an activity related to the fields of counseling, guidance, and support.
The internship will be guided and supervised by an academic advisor from the Department of Educational Sciences at the FPLSE (or co-supervised with an academic or researcher from another faculty or department), generally with the assistance of a teaching assistant or a doctoral student.
The academic supervisor of the internship is responsible for defining their expectations regarding the organization and educational content of the internship (prerequisites, duration, content, assessment methods, etc.) in a tripartite internship agreement, which therefore requires consultation among the student, the internship supervisor, and the academic supervisor of the internship.
Seminar
Students must attend 15 hours of compulsory "internship support seminars"
Three cross-disciplinary seminars (total: 9 hours) will be organised during the academic year. They will cover the following topics:
- Presentation, objectives and organisation of the internship
- The internship report: how to demonstrate the development
of skills gained during the internship in a written report? - Critical incidents: analysis of real-life situations
In addition, each academic coordinator will organise so-called 'field-specific' seminars (total: 6 hours) aimed at providing students with more specific support based on their chosen placement field. The format of these seminars may vary from one academic coordinator to another. Each academic coordinator will inform their students.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Placement
The overall objective of the internships is to provide the intern with situations in which they can appropriately apply the knowledge, skills, and professional attitudes acquired during their academic program. More specifically, the objective of the internship is to guide, advise, and support the educational professionals in the internship setting.
The student will be expected to develop critical learning skills such as (but not limited to):
- becoming aware of the impact of their attitude on the mentoring/support/advising relationship;
- accepting that they are not the expert with the solution;
- listening without feeling the need to resolve issues immediately;
- developing tolerance for uncertainty;
- stepping back from one's own frame of reference to understand that of the other person;
- recognizing tensions as opportunities for growth.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Placement
The course "Master Thesis Preparation: Project Design and Research Ethics" (PEDA4065-1) is a prerequisite for internships.
Each internship proposal may also have its own prerequisites (see the Excel list provided by the academic advisors).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Placement
The purpose of the internship is to apply and develop skills in a professional setting. Students are therefore expected to be physically present at the internship site for at least 90 hours. However, preparatory or follow-up activities may also take place outside the internship site.
Students must attend the accompanying seminars concurrently with their internship period in order to integrate what they have learned in the field with the supervision sessions offered during the seminars.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Placement
Face-to-face course
Further information:
The internship will take place, for a minimum of 90 hours, directly at the workplace, with additional work to be carried out at home (or elsewhere, as agreed with the internship supervisor) in addition to these 90 hours.
Internship support seminars are held exclusively in person.
Additional information:
- Students are required to complete a 180-hour internship, at least 90 hours of which must be spent in the workplace.
- Students must complete the number of internship hours specified in the internship registration form. Credit for the number of internship hours is granted at the end of the internship based on the work actually performed and confirmed by the internship supervisor.
