Learning unit contents

This course aims to support students in progressively developing a personal, nuanced and reflective understanding of the profession of a university-trained speech and language therapist (SLT).

The 3 credits are distributed as follows:

  • Face-to-face teaching sessions with guest speakers: 2 credits (under the supervision of Sandrine Leroy)
  • Observational placement at the University Psychological and Speech and Language Therapy Clinic (CPLU) of ULiège: 1 credit (under the supervision of Trecy Martinez Perez)
The teaching sessions provide an initial introduction to the profession through testimonies from speech and language therapists working in different professional settings, as well as through discussions and reflective activities. They enable students to discover the diversity of professional contexts, career paths, skills involved and issues related to professional identity.

The observational placement in speech and language therapy consultations at the CPLU builds on these learning activities. It enables students to relate the elements discussed in class to concrete clinical situations. Through the observation of sessions, students will also be encouraged to analyse speech and language therapy practice in relation to the Belgian professional profile of the speech and language therapist, to observe the SLT's professional attitude using an adapted observation grid, and to formulate questions or points for further reflection during the remainder of their training.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The learning objectives are to:

  • discover the range of professional contexts in speech and language therapy;
  • discover the range of professional skills used by speech and language therapists;
  • develop their understanding of the profession based on different sources, including course content, professional testimonies, discussions and observations of clinical consultations;
  • progressively develop their professional identity;
  • identify the principles and purpose of reflective practice;
  • relate an observed situation to an item from the professional profile of the speech and language therapist;
  • analyse the SLT's professional attitude using an adapted observation grid, by identifying observable behaviours and illustrating them with concrete examples;
  • develop an active, reflective and respectful approach to observation within the clinical setting;
  • identify areas of curiosity, questions or aspects that remain unclear and that could be explored further during their subsequent training.
The learning provided through the teaching sessions and the observational placement is complementary: the course provides reference points for understanding the profession, while the placement enables students to observe directly how some of these reference points take shape in clinical practice. The overall aim is to help students move from an initial understanding of the profession, which may sometimes be general or intuitive, towards a more contextualised, evidence-based and reflective understanding.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The learning activities are organised around a common thread: encouraging students to question, enrich and progressively develop their understanding of the profession of speech and language therapy.

During the teaching sessions, speech and language therapists working in clinical practice and/or research will share their professional experiences. Different professional contexts and career paths will thus be represented. A patient will also share their personal experience of receiving speech and language therapy. Students will be expected to prepare for these meetings and to engage in discussion with the professionals and the patient.

The observational placement at the CPLU complements this work by enabling students to observe speech and language therapy consultations. Students will be expected to adopt an active and structured approach to observation. In particular, they will be required to:

  • identify a concrete example observed during a session and relate it to an item from the professional profile of the speech and language therapist;
  • analyse the SLT's professional attitude using the adapted CLASS observation grid;
  • formulate a point of curiosity, a question or an aspect that remains unclear and that could be explored further at a later stage.
These observations, carried out as part of the placement, will contribute to the reflective activities undertaken throughout the course, in particular the reflective journal, the comparison between the concept maps produced at the beginning and at the end of the course, and the final reflective synthesis.

Written work / report

Further information:

Written assignment - Report

Assessment focuses on the student's ability to integrate the different components of the course - course content, testimonies from professionals and patients, clinical observations and personal reflection - in order to demonstrate the development of their understanding of the profession of speech and language therapy.

Assessment is based on:

  • a reflective synthesis written by the student, focusing on the development of their understanding of the profession of speech and language therapy;
  • the regular completion of a reflective journal;
  • the submission of two concept maps, one at the beginning and one at the end of the course;
  • structured observations carried out during the observational placement at the CPLU.
Completion of all quizzes/questionnaires available on eCampus will result in one additional point being added to the final course grade, applicable to the entire academic year (first and second examination sessions).

Detailed instructions and quality criteria for these assignments will be provided during the course.

Note concerning spelling: Proficiency in French is one of the basic skills required for professional practice in speech and language therapy. Accordingly, if the submitted report contains more than 5 spelling errors (including usage and/or agreement errors), the student will receive a failing grade (5/20) in the first examination session and will be required to resubmit the report in the second examination session. If the report submitted in the second examination session contains more than 5 spelling errors, 2 points will be deducted from the student's course grade (/20).

Note concerning the report submission deadline: Students are expected to comply with the deadline set for submission of the report. In the first examination session, a report submitted late will result in a failing grade for the first session (6/10) and will have to be resubmitted in the second examination session. In the second examination session, a late submission will result in a deduction of 2 points from the student's course grade.

Note concerning preparation for the session: Students are required to prepare the interview for the session for which they are responsible. Failure to prepare will result in a 2-point penalty being applied to the final grade.

Note concerning the observational placement: The observational placement is compulsory. Only one day of absence may be justified upon presentation of a medical certificate; beyond one day of absence, the observational placement will be considered failed. Before the first day of the placement, the student must obtain a minimum score of 80% on a quiz available on eCampus, covering respect for patients' rights and data protection. If the student obtains a score below 80%, the observational placement will be considered failed and a failing grade will be recorded for course YSEM0006 in the first examination session. The student will then have to take the course in the second examination session, including the submission of the written report. No observational placement will be organised between the first examination session and subsequent examination sessions.

Work placement(s)

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

During the teaching sessions, learning takes place primarily through interaction with speech and language therapists who share their professional experiences during the sessions. Students' involvement and active participation are therefore essential to support their professional development.

The observational placement is organised at the CPLU according to the arrangements established by Ms Martinez Perez as part of the course. Students are not required to find a placement site themselves.

For students joining the speech and language therapy programme in the second semester following a change of programme: It is normally not possible to complete this course solely during the second semester. Assessment is based on several complementary components that take place during the first semester. In addition, the observational placement, which is required to successfully complete the course, is not offered during the second semester. Students in this situation are nevertheless invited to contact Ms Leroy and Ms Martinez by email so that their individual situation can be considered in light of their request and academic pathway.
