Learning unit contents
This course includes theoretical lectures, online practical sessions, and field visits.
Ruminant and monogastric production systems are described in order to provide students with the basic knowledge required for a sound understanding of current livestock production methods.
The topics covered include:
- the production cycles of ruminants and monogastrics;
- the zootechnical performance of ruminants and monogastrics;
- the identification of different species and breeds of domestic animals on pictures;
- organic farming and agroforestry.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The objective is to give a general view of animal production. The objective is not to form specialists but to provide general information on animal production, allowing students to understand ways of breeding in our regions.
The students will be able to:
- supply the essential elements allowing them to define, for studied domestic animals, the breed to which they belong and to know the specificities of their use;
- provide some notions of animal production which are essential to understand livestock farming;
- recognise the species and the breed of a domestic animal based on a picture;
- understand the systemic role of livestock farming.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Part of the course will consist of theoretical lectures delivered in person:
- 12 hours with first-year Bachelor's students in Veterinary Medicine in Liège (VETE3018 - https://www.programmes.uliege.be/cocoon/20262027/cours/VETE3018-1.html);
- 4 hours with MICA students only.
Online practical sessions will also be organised.
A farm visit is planned as a practical activity.
Theoretical lectures, seminars, and field visits require students' attendance. Attendance will be monitored.
Students who do not attend the field-based sessions (the training day in Strée and the farm visit) will receive an exclusion grade and will not be allowed to take the examination during the first examination session.

The examinations are designed to assess students' knowledge and understanding of the course, as well as their ability to integrate its various components.
The examination is a written exam consisting of short-, medium-, and long-answer open questions, as well as MCQs and/or MRQs. It covers the material taught during the theoretical lectures, online practical sessions, practical activities, and field activities.
A minimum grade of 10.00/20 is required to pass the course. Grades below 10.00/20 will not be rounded up.
