1° analyse a source document, identify potential textual and cognitive difficulties
and assess the strategies and resources needed for appropriate reformulation
in line with communicative needs.
2° translate journalism- and media-related materials and produce a 'fit for purpose' translation.
3° check, review and/or revise their own work and that of others according to
standard or work-specific quality objectives.
4° analyse and justify their translation solutions and choices, using the
appropriate metalanguage and applying appropriate theoretical approaches.

5° approach Dutch-speaking cultures (within and outside Europe) in their historical, socio-economic, political and artistic dimensions.

This part of the teaching unit consists of several modules that illustrate several facets of the practice of translating texts in the fields of journalism and the media. A whole array of texts and audiovisual documents will be the focus of our attention during these practical translation classes. Written component: Produce an original translation of a text of approximately 300 words and a post-editing exercise - also original - of a text of approximately 200 words, which has first been run through a machine translation application.
Exam conditions: laptops are permitted, as is access to relevant websites; the use of email and mobile phones is prohibited.
The use of generative AI tools and any translation aids, such as machine translation software, is strictly prohibited during the exam, and any student found to be in breach of this rule will be subject to the applicable sanctions for academic misconduct. The lecturer reserves the right to review the search history of the search engine(s) used on the day of the examination.
Oral component: An interview will be organised later in the examination period. This will allow students to discuss certain aspects of their written work, justify their translation choices and, where appropriate, amend them. As for the lecturer, this interview will enable them to question students on key sections of the source text in order to assess their understanding of those sections, as well as their ability to accurately render this content in French.
2. Continuous assessment (15% of the final mark)
This part of the assessment relates to regular and active participation in the course, in particular through the careful preparation of weekly assignments and the production of a digest of a press article (this assingment is part of the department's collective project Le p'TI Journal) *.
* In accordance with Article 64 of the General Regulations for Studies and Examinations (RGEE), classwork (e.g. written assignments, oral presentations, projects, etc.), the marks for which contribute to the final mark, is organised only once per academic year. For pedagogical and practical reasons - in particular ongoing monitoring, specific supervision, group work, classroom interaction and the practical organisation of presentations - these assessments cannot be retaken in the second session. The mark obtained for these assignments is therefore retained for the calculation of the final mark in both the first and second sessions.
This course unit is subject to the 'absorbing mark' principle, which means that if a mark of less than 8/20 is awarded for any one of the learning activities (LA), that mark then becomes the overall mark for the course unit. Only the examination for the failed LA may be retaken in the second sitting.
