Learning unit contents
"Théorie et pratique de la traduction de l'espagnol vers le français" addresses various issues in translation studies through the translation into French of authentic and diverse texts (in terms of their subject matter, style, function, and target audience, among other factors) written in Spanish. As far as possible, one or more translations will become part of the "p'TI Journal", which this year is dedicated to the theme of "care." In addition, students will be asked to complete an individual assignment based on a text of their choice.
This course will enable students
- to enhance their strategies for translating from Spanish to French through the reading and analysis of texts on translation studies and
- to develop their ability to engage in metalinguistic reflection-both orally and in writing-on their own translation practices.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- identify translation issues specific to the texts they are required to translate;
- apply the most appropriate translation strategies to the texts in question, based on translation studies sources;
- write translation comments using translation studies sources.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Very good proficiency in Spanish and perfect mastery of French
Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Further information:
January Session
Continuous assessment: 10% of the total course grade (submission of 3 assignments)
Individual assignment: translation portfolio (90%), consisting of a translation into French (of a text of approximately 500 words, written in Spanish, not previously translated into French, and different from the one chosen for the Master thesis) and a translation commentary (approximately 1,000 words, drawing on at least three sources on translation studies)
- Step 1: Select a text and identify one of its translation challenges
- Step 2: Oral presentation (30% of the total course grade)
- Step 3: Submission of the portfolio on the first day of the January exam session (30% of the total course grade)
- Step 4: Oral defense (approximately 20 minutes), during the exam session (30% of the total course grade)
In the event of an excused absence on the day of the oral presentation (Step 2), the student may present their work on another date, to be determined in consultation with the instructor. If the schedule no longer permits this, the student must submit a written make-up assignment.
If the student has not completed the presentation (Step 2) or, failing that, the compensatory written assignment, they will not be able to submit the translation portfolio.
The oral defense (Step 4) is mandatory. If the student does not present this part, they will receive a grade of 0 for the defense, as well as for the translation portfolio.
The use of AI and machine translation tools is prohibited for the preparation of the project.
