Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
The course explores the cultural diversity of Italy in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries through the study of cities associated with poets. The city serves as a point of entry for exploring different historical, social, and cultural realities of the Italian peninsula, including the question of Trieste, the anti-fascist Resistance, mass industrialisation, urban transformations, as well as the relationships between memory, territory, and identity.
The study of poetic texts will be complemented by historical, cultural, and literary documents that will provide a context for the works and highlight the diversity of urban and territorial experiences in Italy.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
* situate Italian poetic works from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries within their historical, social, and cultural contexts;
* identify and analyse representations of the city, territory, and identity in the texts studied;
* relate a literary text to elements of its historical and cultural context;
* recognise the diversity of Italy's contemporary cultural, social, and territorial realities;
* draw on different types of sources and documents in order to develop a personal reflection on an Italian city;
* deliver a structured oral presentation in Italian and justify their choices.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
B2 level in the Italian language (e.g., upon completion of Italian I and II courses).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course will alternate between presentation and contextualisation sessions, close readings and analyses of poetic texts, and the study of historical, cultural, and literary documents.
Each student will prepare a short oral presentation of approximately ten minutes focusing on an Italian city, based on a city-poet pairing. The presentation will establish a connection between a selected text and the historical, social, and cultural elements necessary to contextualise it.
