Learning unit contents

Introduction to the study of Greek inscriptions considered as a historical source.

Brief history of the discipline; general method and specific techniques: importance of inscriptions, contributions of inscriptions, dating, publication, support, reading and transcription.

Bibliographic introduction: presentation of corpora and updates and tools.

Reading of documents (originals and translations) representative of different types of inscriptions: epitaphs (private and public), honorific texts, diplomatic texts (relations between city-states and correspondence between kings and city-states), receipts and expenditures, justice and law, competitions, religious life (dedications, offerings, decrees, oracles, miraculous healings, mystery cults), acts of manumission.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

To be able to exploit a Greek inscription within the framework of a scientific study (historical and philological).

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

A basic knowledge of Ancient Greek is desirable, but not essential.
