Learning unit contents

This course is designed for second-year Master's students of all specializations at GxABT. It focuses primarily on language for specific purposes.

A range of themes will be explored through videos and specialized publications. The targeted skills include: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written production in academic Dutch, and both group and individual oral production.

At the beginning of the academic year, four themes will be selected; these will serve as the foundation for the year's work. Regular coursework is essential, as it accounts for 4 out of 20 points, and consistent attendance is therefore indispensable to ensure the successful progress of the course.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of the course, students will have acquired the specialized vocabulary necessary to understand a variety of scientific texts and videos related to their field of expertise. They will also be able to express themselves, both in writing and orally, on topics closely connected to their area of study.

A comprehensive project (oral and written) will be carried out during the year, integrating all the skills required for the effective communication of scientific information.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

A basic knowledge of Dutch is essential. Refresher tools will be provided for those who may require them.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The different skills involved in language learning will be addressed: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, as well as written and oral production, all supported by grammar review and the study of specialized vocabulary.

Active participation is essential.

Additional Explanations

The final grade (in June) will be based on two compulsory examinations, in addition to a group presentation and continuous assessment:

Written Examination (two parts):

Part 1: Listening comprehension (unseen audio or video sequence)

Part 2: Reading comprehension and specialized vocabulary

Oral Examination:

Registration for the oral exam takes place in the weeks preceding it.

Vocabulary and content questions will be asked on one of the four themes selected at the beginning of the year.

Group Presentation:

In accordance with Article 64 of the General Regulations on Studies and Examinations (GRSE), coursework carried out during teaching periods (written assignments, oral presentations, projects, etc.), the grades of which contribute to the final mark, is organized only once per academic year. For pedagogical and practical reasons-particularly continuous assessment, specific supervision, group work, classroom interaction, and the practical organization of presentations-such assessments cannot be retaken in the resit session. The grade obtained for this coursework is deemed to apply to all examination sessions and is therefore retained for the calculation of the final mark in both the first and second sessions.

An oral group presentation based on one of the four themes, organized by specialization groups in Semester 2, during class time, according to a schedule communicated in Semester 1.

In case of absence, the presentation must be given individually during the oral exam.

Continuous Assessment (Daily Work):

Written productions related to the chosen themes are graded and count toward the final grade

Important: A request for a "participation grade" or absence from any part of the examination automatically results in a "participation grade" or absence being recorded for the entire exam.
