Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
The course will include five parts, grouped in two partims . PARTIM A - Part 1 : Mechanics: generic laws of motion (cinematics, dynamics, statics). Part 2 : Complements of mechanics (laws of conservation, elasticity, vibrations). Part 3 : waves. PARTIM B - Part 4 : heat and thermodynamics. Part 5 : mechanics of fluids.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The goal of the course is to learn some new fundamental concepts, related to different Physics fields (mechanics of point , mechanics of solids, mechanics of fluids, thermodynamics) and that are relevant for students in Biology, Geology and Geography. The emphasis is placed on an active knowledge and the resolution of exercices.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Basics in mathematics and physics at the level of high-school.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course includes 45 h. of theory (23 x 2h), 28 h. of exercices ( 14 x 2h) and 12 h. of laboratories (4 x 3h). Free tutorials will also be proposed.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face-to-face course
Additional information:
Everything is organized on-site.
Recommended or required readings
Mandatory support : book Physique of Joseph Kane & Morton Sternheim, 4th edition revised by Philippe Ghosez, Marise Hoebeke and Gabriel Llabrès (Dunod, Paris 2018). ISBN 978-2-10-076175-3.
Additional supports : slides from the course as well as podcasts (theory and exercices) are available on-line.
Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
written exam ( open-ended questions )
- Remote
written exam ( open-ended questions )
Additional information:
The exam will include two independent writing tests with open-eneded questions. The first test will concern PARTIM A : theory and exercices. The second test will concern PARTIM B: theory, exercices and the laboratories.
(student from the Faculty of Philosophie et Lettres who are registered to PARTIM A only are concerned with the first test only)
Work placement(s)
Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
For practical reasons, the course is organized in two partims :
PARTIM A [Th. : 30h; TD : 20h] - Part 1 : mechanics : laws of motion; Part 2 : complement of mechanics; Part 3: waves.
PARTIM B [Th.:15h; TD: 8h; TP: 12h] - Part 4 : heat and thermodynamics; Part 5 : fluids; laboratories on the whole course.
Students from the Faculty of Philosophie et Lettres for whom the course is counted "5 credits" only follow PARTIM A.
