Learning unit contents

Labor market studies focus on the mechanisms and dynamics defining how contemporary work is organized. These studies, often anchored into sociological and economical disciplines, have significant implications on the strategy of firms and the elaboration of HR policies. Moreover, numerous modern transformations, including technological innovations and digitalization, have resulted in major changes on labor markets and the way firms and individuals interact. In this context, the course's objectives are twofold. On the one hand, the course aims to familiarize students with the theoretical and analytical foundations of labor market studies. On the other hand, the course offers an overview of the important changes on labor markets that are triggered by digitalization. A large range of contemporary topics, such as, among others, labor scarcity, online labor markets, precarity, algorithmic recruitment, pay inequality, and labor market intermediation will be analyzed theoretically and critically, but also through studies of empirical cases.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

- Mastering the concepts and theoretical foundations of labor market studies.

- Understanding the contemporary evolutions of labor markets and their implications for organizations and/or the HR profession.

- Refining their knowledge of European labor markets by exploring a portfolio of empirical case studies conducted by scholars.

This course contributes to the following Intended Learning Outcomes :
