Learning unit contents

Reflexive approach to the mechanisms and techniques of translation (including post-editing). Reflection on translation theories and how they can be used to sharpen the students' analysis of their own tranlsating skills. Texts of all types will be translated.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Analysis of the translation problems derived from the syntax and specificities of the English language. Introduction to post-editing techniques applied to machine-translation outputs. The aim of this training is to develop the students' theoretical reflection as well as their ability to write and structure theoretical commentaries.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Excellent command of the English language. Perfect command of the target language, i.e. French. Intellectual curiosity and méthodological accuracy. .

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Analysis of the main translation theories (and group presentation of the main translation theories) and how they can be used as interpretive tools to sharpen the students' translating skills. Translation exercises highlighting the specificities and difficulties of the English language. Post-editing exercises applied to machine-translation outputs.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face class, Thursdays 2-4pm, rooms 2/5 and 2/1. 1st term. Online course if the pandemic situation requires it.

Texts on translation theories as well as texts to be translated are posted on MyULiege and E-campus.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Written exam in January with dictionaries and Internet access. Commented translation of a new text.
