Is there a strengthening of social control mechanisms (individual and collective) in different areas of social life today? And are fears part of these mechanisms?
What role do traditional and social media play today in this context? And how do sociologists, criminologists, political scientists, anthropologists, philosophers and historians play in this context?
The course proposes to distinguish three grammars of social control, i.e. three sets of works that have helped to shape contrasting meanings of the concept: order, deviance and surveillance. It also introduces a fourth grammar, "fears as devices of social control".
To do this, we will borrow various empirical illustrations relating, in particular, to the coronavirus and the prison world.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
In order to answer the questions that form the basis of this course, three dimensions should be articulated: the learning of sociological concepts, the practice of research exercises (in pairs, empirical approach and press review) and the presentation/discussion of intermediate results.

The course will consist of 11 sessions
The course is organized in the form of seminars, allowing interactions and necessary exchanges between the students. The course invites students to analyze a situation and problematize the questions at the center of the course by focusing on the link between theory and documentary research. Each selected situation is prepared and presented by a pair of students.
In a second step, the presentation leads to the writing of a paper (scientific article model)

A reading list is communicated to students depending on the theme chosen and some more scientific articles will be posted online along the year.
Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
A working paper of 1,600 to 2,000 words must be sent by 10 January to C.Dubois@uliege.be.
