Learning unit contents

Study of Spanish grammar and practice with four linguistic abilities: reading, oral comprehension, writing and conversation.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

This course is intended to improve knowledge of Spanish morphology and syntax and to develop the communicative ability gained during the first year course. At the end of the course students should be able to apply and to explain grammar rules, and their ability to communicate should reach level C1 according to the common European framework of reference.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Mastery of elementary morphology and syntax and basic vocabulary. The diploma or certificate from the Spanish Language I course is thus required.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The Spanish II course is divided as follows: one hour of theory (flipped clasroom method) and two hours of "practical work" in small groups. Part of the work corresponding to the TP will be do at home, including 20-30 minutes of online oral practice every two weeks. These three hours are required. One additional hour (reinforcement and conversation) is organized. It is optional but highly recommended.
Practice of the language and grammar is compulsory. Translation and written exercises and active participation in class.
TI students should only follow the theory course.

The course will have a blended learning format (TP and theory).
In the case of an eventual online evaluation, the january test will count for 5%.

A mandatory reading will be announced during the TP.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

January session: a written mandatory test is organized. 15% of the grade will come from exercices and class participation.
The score of this test will be taken into account for calculating the score necessary to access the oral exam in June, except for those students who have not passed the exam (see below).
 

May-June: written and oral exam required. 15% of the grade will come from exercices and class participation.
Only students who have obtained a rating of or greater than 7/20 may present the oral examination. Access score = 1/3 of the written examination in January + 2/3 of the written exam in May.
A list of students admitted to the oral exam in June will be published after the correction of the written test.
For students who have passed the January exam, the final grade in June is calculated from the mark obtained in the written examination in January (5%), that of the written examination in May (40%), and the one obtained for the oral examination (40%). For those who have not passed the exam in January, the final mark consists only on the written examination in May (42,5%) and on the oral exam in June (42,5%). The rest (15%) corresponds to the attendance and participation grade.
 
In the second session, the final grade is composed of the written exam in August (50%) and oral exam in August (50%) for all students.

The oral examination is individual and concerns the contents seen in class and the mandatory readings. The following aspects will be taken into account when evaluating the oral exam: the adequacy of responses in relation to questions, coherence (discourse structure, use of connectors, etc.), phonetics, the use of grammatical and lexical resources.
 
TI students only have to present the exam correspoding to the theory course.
