Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The sociology course (45h, 6 credits), which is part of the program of the first year of the bachelor's degree in sociology and anthropology and the bachelor's degree in human and social sciences, aims to introduce students to sociological reasoning through an analytical approach to the context emergence of sociology as a scientific discipline, through a presentation and discussion of three major theoretical paradigms (Durkheim, Weber, Mead) and the elucidation of a fact of society (the dissemination of "fake news" in the media field).
Students will be required to "look" at everyday social reality, engage in critical thinking about current issues and facts from everyday life. They will thus be led to adopt and cultivate a methodical mistrust of propositions of common sense, ready-made ideas, a socio-psychological vulgate or ideological assertions.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The course aims to develop the following skills: the ability to extract factual information from journalistic texts, testimonials or other handwritten traces; the ability to distance oneself from propositions of common sense that come in the form of evidences, prenotations, indisputable convictions, etc. ; the ability to question a fact of society by mobilizing the theoretical tools discussed during the course sessions and included in the written support.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Fluency in French.
A basic understanding of the history of Western society since the 18th century.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The lesson sessions are based on a syllabus made available to students. This syllabus is available at the Presses de l'Université de Liège at Sart-Tilman. The lectures will be devoted to the presentation and analysis of the first sociological approaches, the historical birth conditions of sociology and three major paradigms (Durkheim, Weber and Mead). The theoretical contributions of each of the paradigms will be mobilized to analyze a current social event (the dissemination of fake news in the media field); practical exercises will be dedicated to this analysis.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Course in classroom. The course material contains exercises that will be solved collectively. Formative evaluations will be organized to measure the understanding of essential notions. The presence of students is necessary, given the approach implemented.

Assessment methods and criteria

The overall evaluation of the Sociology course is composed of: 1. a note on 60 pts for a written query. Will be appreciated: the control of the contents, the precision in the references to the authors and in the mobilization of the theoretical concepts; the integration of the different notions used in the answer (the evaluation will be more favorable if the student has proceeded to an articulation of the different notions, rather than to a succession of observations with no apparent link); the finesse and originality of the answers to the questions. If the written examination is sanctioned by a serious deficiency, the overall performance will also be punished by a serious deficiency. 2. a score of 30 points for the completion of the intermediate formative evaluations. Points are awarded for conducting these assessments; the content is subject only to an indicative assessment. 3. a score of 10 points for a blank examination and for participation in the debriefing session (correction of the blank test). Points will be awarded for the completion of this blank examination; the content is subject only to an indicative assessment.
