The course is an introduction to the key theories and concepts in the sociology of immigration and integration (assimilation, citizenshi, culture, ethnicity, interculturalism, racism, transnationalism, asylum, migration)

At the end of the course, the student should be able to use these concepts to analyse social situations

MODE OF DELIVERY: FACE-TO-FACE. Attendance is highly recommended. The course consists in about 10 sessions (2 hours each) plus the complusory participation in a few lectures organized by CEDEM

Assessment methods and criteria
First Session: In the written evaluation, particular attention will be given to the ability of the student to practice the epistemological break and get out of pre-concepts and common sense. During the written exam, the student will problematize the sociological issues at the center of the course through the analysis of a situation identified in the recent events related to migration, citizenship and intercultural relations.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session
Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning
Since the lockdown, the course continues to be delivered at the usual schedule but through distance learning devices. Students are invited to join the Collaborate tool on the eCampus platform. The podcasts and powerpoint files of the lessons given on Collaborate are made available under the Podcast tab of My ULg.
All the written course material is made available on eCampus.
Students are encouraged to follow the MOOC "Migration: how human mobility transforms societies?" made available on the France Universié Numérique Platform
Assessment subjects
The material is made up of all the powerpoints and podcasts available on the eCampus platform
Instead of the reading portfolio of previous years, readings are offered on eCampus. They are accompanied by a color code.
- Red color code: compulsory readings,
- Orange color code: recommended readings
- Green color code: optional readings.
The Ethnicity 1 and 2 powerpoints offered in previous years are not part of the examination material in 2020.

Assessment methods
The exam will consist of a 2 hour written assessment on the eCampus platform. It will be an examination based on the capacity to use the acquired knowledge.
