Learning unit contents

The first part of the seminar will explore modal questions in the Middle Ages and its various theoreticians, referring to the legacy of Antiquity. These perspectives will be confronted with new issues provided by ethnomusicology.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The octoechos of the eight modes, main figures of theoreticians and their works, references to the Greco-Latin Antiquity.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Foundations of the current theory of music. Ability to "read" music. A minimum knowledge of history and music in the Middle Ages.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Seminar. Each course includes a lecture and tutorials, case studies on historical documents. At each session, the students receive a small research which they must present the result during the following course.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Interactive classroom seminar. Attendance at sessions is necessary.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written final exam: a paper essay, prepared by the student's research.
