Learning unit contents
24 hour course
The course is given in Q2 only.
Classes will be taught for two hours each week. The classes will include the following activities:
- discussions and debates on psychology-related topics;
- short case-studies presented orally;
- seminars (presentations + activities) organised by each student.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of the course, the student will be able to:
- present a clear and smoothly-flowing description or argument in a style appropriate to the context and with an effective, logical structure;
- express him or herself fluently and, in the event of difficulty, effectively and smoothly restructure a sentence;
- Organise and manage activities in class so as to encourage the participation of the other students. The student will therefore also be expected to effectively manage his or her time and ensure a successful seminar;
- Give constructive feedback to his or her colleagues.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
This course is the continuation of last year's course, so the level corresponds to the European level C1+. Thus, students will need to have a comprehensive knowledge of the vocabulary and grammar studied in the previous years of their degree.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
This class uses a dynamic approach to using English specific to the domain of psychology.
Students will principally be concentrating on fine-tuning their speaking skills and the activities will include:
- Presentations and workshops given in a real-life setting;
- Case-studies and giving constructive feedback;
- Debates and discussions on themes linked to psychology.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
Weekly 2 hour class in a group of about 25 students. The course will be focussed on speaking practice.
Recommended or required readings
Articles and audio files for debate and general interest will be uploaded to eCampus.
Each group will post the agenda of their seminar on eCampus the week before the seminar itself.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session
Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning
The seminars given by the students are all to be given 'virtually', but the students may choose how they give their seminar (e.g. via the use of video-conferencing tools, Powerpoint slides plus video and /or audio, use of padlet, etc.)
Assessment subjects
The exam will consist solely of an oral presentation given by each individual student based either on their thesis, a part of their thesis, an aspect of their thesis, or an article linked to the subject of their thesis. There will be a few a questions based on the presentation itself.
The second part of the exam based on the seminars given by the other students will therefore not take place!
Assessment methods
Each student will give an oral presentation based on one of the following:
- their thesis OR
- a part of their thesis (e.g. one particular experiment) OR
- an aspect of the subject they have been working on for their thesis (e.g. theory, background, etc.) OR
- a scientific article linked to the subject of their thesis.
The oral presentation should last 10 minutes, and the question and answer session should last 5-10 minutes. Students should use a visual support such as Powerpoint or Prezi.
The presentation will take place via a video-conferencing tool (details to be posted on ecampus).
The exam schedule remains the same (May 29th in the afternoon and May 30th all day) but can be modified on individual request.
