Learning unit contents

IMPORTANT: TEACHING LANGUAGES = FRENCH AND GERMAN.
- the student will learn about the structure of the German language
- the student will acquire a few notions of usual vocabulary in German (how to introduce him self, how to say hello, how to tell wich languages he can speak...)
- the student will learn basic grammar rules (conjugating - present tense, negation of a sentence, numbers, time, ...)
Skills: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing (grammar / vocabulary).
We will really begin with speaking  in "Allemand 2".

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

In connection with the KLOs, when leaving HEC, the students who  learned German will be able to communicate efficiently in German, taking into account the multicultural and international features of their environment.
This course will help students to communicate efficiently, internally and externally, about a company, organization or project; it will will allow students to improve their proficiency in German as a foreign language; and it will  allow students to raise their awareness of the multicultural and international features of their environment.
At the end of the course "Allemand 1", the students should reach level A1+ (European Language Portfolio)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

- in the class room: the teacher explains the grammar, introduces the vocabulary, organises exercises about listening and reading comprehension and about grammar and vocabulary.
- every week: home work

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

1 hour / week.

Book: DaF im Unternehmen, Kursbuch mit Audios und Filmen online, A1/A2, de Ilse Sander u. a., éditions Klett (disponible à la Centrale des cours; distributeur en Belgique: Intertaal).

Assessment methods and criteria

Written exam in January (15%):
- listening comprehension (15%)
- grammar and vocabulary: formative test (the student can obtain bonus points)
Written exam in June (85%):
- listening comprehension (15%)
- reading comprehension (20%)
- grammar and vocabulary, written expression (50%)

The student who doesn't take all the parts of the exam will become 0/20 as final mark.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Assessment subjects

Each student has to write a text at home - all details on Lol@.
What students have to learn:


  • vocabulary from chapters 1 to 5 of the book (German-French and French-German)
  • grammar of chapters 1 to 5 (book + handout)
Students will not be asked about the dialogues in the book.

Assessment methods

Individual oral exam by videoconference:




  • Feedback and questions about the homewritten essay (students who do not hand in their homewritten essay are not allowed to take the oral exam).
  • questions about vocabulary
  • short sentences to be translated from French to German, via the "chat" tool
  • answer simple questions (orally or via the "chat" tool)
No listening or reading comprehension.
Bonus points from January will of course be included in the mark.
