Learning unit contents

This course, dedicated to the analysis of creation from 1960 until today, aims to explore the major artistic tendencies s of this period by focusing on:
- the movements of the 60s and 70s (Pop Art, Conceptual Art, Performance Art) and contemporary painting
- new practices ("technological" art, digital arts, sound art, urban art, the art of video games, the art of tattoo)
- the current trends in the world of museum exhibitions (revival of the cabinet of curiosities, exhibitions of artists)
- fundamental notions and concepts such as postmodernity, institutional criticism, artification
- major currents of thought such as Cultural Studies and Postcolonial Studies;
- the major changes in the "world" of contemporary art (globalization, institutionalization, the rise of fairs and biennials, new intermediaries of art, etc.)

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Through the questions and subjects that it addresses, this course aims to provide students with training leading to a specialization in the field of the history of contemporary art.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

It is preferable that the student has already taken a general course on the history of twentieth century art.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Master's seminar where teaching methods and materials are varied:
- theoretical classes, with projection of a slide show and note taking by the student
- courses given by specialists in contemporary art:
* Pierre-Olivier ROLLIN (Director of the BPS22, Museum of Art of the Province of Hainaut)
* Maria Elena MINUTO (researcher and scientific collaborator Uliège)
- meetings with artists:
* Jacques CHARLIER
- interventions by doctoral students, former graduates and students in the last year of their master's degree:
* Alisson BISSCHOP (doctoral student with fellowship in human sciences, ULiège)
* Alix NYSSEN (doctoral assistant, ULiège)
* Pierre-Yves DESAIVE (ULiège PhD student, curator at the Brussels MRBA)
* Morgane OTT (graduate Uliège)
* Léana MICHEL (student, Uliège)
- documentary screenings, followed by a discussion
