This course is not organized in 2019-2020.
The cours is taught in Dutch and is organized in two parts :

  • in the first part, the course will focus on the legal discipline; it will be taught by a law professor, in Dutch
  • in the second part, language support is offered by a linguist (operating with the ISLV), in close contact with the relevant law professor

This course is not organized in 2019-2020
Consumer protection law comprises all legal provisions aimed at the protection of natural persons acting in a non professional or commercial way. On the crossroads between the law of obligations, economic law and European Union law, consumer law touches upon unfair commercial practices, abusive clauses and the protection of consumers in e-commerce and other online tranactions. This course will give students an overview of the key concepts and notions of consumer law . Teaching will take place in Dutch.

Taalbegeleiding in het Nederlands

This additional language module will essentially be geared towards verbal interaction and the reinforcement of oral language skills. It will tackle various language functions such as giving a structured presentation, expressing an opinion and arguing a point.
It will cover law-related topics and vocabulary, without focusing on one specific branch nor on highly technical terminology.
This module will also promote the students' practice of basic grammar structures, in order to improve oral fluency.

At the end of this module the students will have

  • improved their oral fluency through a series of exercises and activities related to law designed to elicit conversations and discussions;
improved their oral skills in order to prepare for the main course's oral exam.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Corequis : Legal Terminology in Dutch

Consumentenbescherming

Basic knowledge of the law of obligations and economic law as well as a basic understanding of Dutch will be required. The professor will stimulate an increasingly active participation throughout the course, adapting to the level of each individual student.

This course builds upon the following courses :

  • 1st year of the bachelor programme: "Néerlandais usuel et juridique
  • 2nd year of the bachelor programme: "Terminologie juridique et analyse de textes en langue néerlandaise"

  • Oral activities such as discussions, role playing, presentations, debates on legal topics presented through short videos.
  • Practical exercises to reactivate, assimilate and use legal vocabulary.
  • Drill exercises in order to put basic grammar structures into practice and improve oral fluency.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Interactive course sessions and case studies allowing to use the appropriate Dutch legal vocabulary.

Taalbegeleiding in het Nederlands

This module is offered during one term, with ten weekly 90-minute classes.
Attendance is compulsary. Students will prepare the activities and exercises planned for each class. Regular attendance and active participation are essential.

Recommended or required readings

A detailed course plan, cases and materials and PowerPoint slides will be made available to students. Class discussions will be stimulated and students are required to read the materials in advance.

Assessment methods and criteria

Each student will obtain a global mark for the course, which consists of two separate grades, one for each section of the course, as follows :
- 3/4 of the global markt for the legal part;
- 1/4 of the global markt for the language support part.
A student who obtain a grade equal or lower than 8/20 for one of the two components, is not entitled to obtain more dans 9/20 for the global markt
An exemption for the language support part can be obtained for the second examination session.  No partial exaemptions can be obtained for onte or the other section of the course, from one year to the next.
Option Langues et mobilité :
Students who have completed one of the language course in bloc 2 under the "language and mobility option" and who are taking a second course in the same language in bloc 3 are exempted from the language supplement for the second course.

No exam, permanent evaluation comprised of:
Class participation (30% of final grade)
group presentations on case studies (70% of final grade, division to be announced on eCampus)

Continued evaluation: - one short oral presentation in class: 2/5 - two short tests in class (during the 5th and the 10th class): 3/5
 The result of the continued assessment will be maintained and included in the global result of the 2nd session.
