Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

General introduction to codicology: work on MSS from the University collection and on digitised MSS accessible online. We will at first consider some main features of the codex: the way it is manufactured, the way it appears, the way it is used. Then we will study in detail materials and production techniques. We will explore the concepts of mise en page and mise en texte (especially for manuscript witnesses of Romance texts), offer some basic elements of palaeography, and consider manuscript tradition as the main form of textual tradition in the Middle Ages.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Students will acquire a general knowledge of codicology, working directly on MSS and on digitisations. They will develop a critical attitude towards the many online databases about MSS. The course is mainly focussed on the alterity of the medieval text and of textual tradition. Full comprehension and good interpretation of a given manuscript page require a set of competences and methods partly different from that required by a printed page. An introduction to the preparation of an exhaustive codicological analysis is a complementary (but not marginal) purpose of this course.
