Learning unit contents

The course will address documentary film history from the 1920's to the present and will introduce the students to the technical, aesthetical and political aspects of documentary filmmaking. How to film "reality"? What are the different types of documentary films? How to represent the "other"? To what extend does a documentary film refer to the social and political context of its time? What are the basic ingredients that foster the reading of a film in a "documentary perspective" (Odin)?

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The students will acquire basic knowledge on documentary film history and develop analytical skills (historical and sociocritical) in the field of documentary cinema.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course will rely on the watching and the analysis of documentary films. The analysis will be developped in class through discussions with the sutdents. Each session will end with a q&a on the texts (see "required readings").

One week priori to each session, a text will be made available to the students via MyULg (required reading).

Assessment methods and criteria

Written exam on the course content, the films that have been screened in class and the texts available on MyULg.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the Aug-Sept 2020 session

Assessment subjects

The assessment subjects remain unchanged: professor's presentations, required readings (available on MyULiège) and films screened in class. 

Assessment methods

Written exam. The exam will be sent to the students by mail (official ULiège address) on August the 19th at 10AM, and the students will return their copy at 3PM at the latest. (jhamers@uliege.be).
