Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

- Organization and functioning of the educational system of the French-speaking Community of Belgium, its institutions and its policies: reference legislative texts and statistical indicators, decisional levels, evolution of the models of operation.
- How does the French-speaking Community of Belgium perform in comparative studies of school achievement (IEA and PISA).
- Meetings with representatives of the main teachers' trade unions.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

- Learn about the educational policies and the current organization of the education system in the French-speaking Community of Belgium.
- Read and interprete statistical data and indicators about the educational system.
- Understand and take a critical stance towards the school institution using elements from history and relating it to the context.
- Understand his/her own teacher's posture and engagement. Knowing better and understanding the multiple constraints which influence the teaching, instead of discouraging teachers, should enable them to better identify their power and range of options.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

None.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course, given in a hall, is made up of lectures, questions and answers supported by Power-Point slides. It suggests questions relative
- to yourself in your teacher's job (your rights and your duties). For example: According to the educational network you work for, who will be your employer? What will be your legal and administrative status, your career evolution ? How will your relationships with the Inspection? Which precautions to take to avoid appeals?

- to the part that you can play in order to foster social change. For example:
Which are the potential consequences, for the educational career of pupils, of the reorientation opinions given at the staff meetings?

Answers to the afore-mentioned questions will be based on the analysis of legal reference texts(especially the "Decree-Missions"), structure and functioning of the educational system. It will be linked to some historical elements of our school system (to understand the evolution in our system) and draw on comparisons with other education systems.
