Written Translation The course content is based on a wide variety of texts with difficulty levels ranging from 1 to 3 on a 9-point scale. All documents in this lower tier are genuine (i.e. originally written in) Spanish texts selected as per the following four major criteria : (i) the topic (one per week not be be repeated throughout the semester), (ii) the country (texts from major as well as minor Spanish-speaking countries), (iii) the type (opinion, editorial, press review, special report, feature article), and (iv) the relevance of each content with regard to translating (grammar issues, "sister language"-related traps, etc.)

The course is based on a multi-step approach: 1) Learning the basics of cross-reading so as to quickly grasp the key elements of each sentence. Use of a common visual support to progessively unveil the text structure (key => detail information). 2) Text rendering by limited chunks (50 to 100 words) in reading mode. Each student is invited to take the floor. 3) Same text rendering in memory mode (with no visual support). 4) Once the technique is understood and acquired, the same rendering exercise is performed off printed material of increasing length (350 words max). Note: at this point (Bloc 3), the public speaking aspect prevails over the language considerations.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written Translation Final exam is based on a 500-word text to be translated in 150 minutes. The student is allowed to use one French and one Spanish monolingual dictionary. This end of the year assessment focuses on four main criteria: a) meaning, b) grammar, c) style, and d) terminology.
Note: Students are also required to take a French language exam made up of all the issues discussed in class. For instance, the May 2017 version contained about 100 questions. The overall grade of 20 for this course disaggregates as follows : 80% on the written translation, and 20% on the French language exam. Note: the student needs a double-digit grade on each of the two exams to get a overall passing grade (i.e equal or greater than 10).
Traduction à vue espagnol-français
Sight translation of a non-technical text of around 300 words. The student has eight (8) minutes for preparation. Grade on this exam is 20/20.

Groups of five students (average) are set up so that each student can take the floor as many times as possible during the two-hour course. In order to keep all groups equally balanced, any student who cannot (or does not want to) attend has to let the professor know in advance s/he will be missing. Notification is allowed up until 10 minutes before class starts. The professor and his assistants are then in a position to reshuffle groups. No-show students who give no advance notice will get a 0.5 penalty off the term overal grade, each time they fail to meet this requirement.
