Learning unit contents

After a general introduction aiming to analyse French and English from a contrastive perspective (with a view to synthetising their main differences and specificities), we will focus on a corpus of thematically and stylistically varied texts, which will be translated and commented upon (at home and collectively).
The course also includes an introduction to the field of Translation Studies.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The course intends to deepen the students' ability to compare the syntactic structure of English and French, and to enhance the idiomaticity of their language.
By the end of the course, they should be able not only to produce a commented translation (into a foreign language), but also to reflect on translation as an activity and on their own position as translators.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Excellent command of the French and English languages.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

After attending the introductory sessions dedicated to the main structural differences between French and English, students will be asked to translate various texts at home. These individual translations will then be corrected and commented upon collectively.
The course will also offer an Introduction to the field of Translation Studies.
