Learning unit contents

This course is for students who want to increase their knowledge of Spanish literature. The course takes a specialised approach to contemporary Spanish literature, from 1898 to 1936. We will employ sociological methods currently in use in approaching literary texts, taking into account particularly the conditions of production and reception of Spanish literature. We will read, amongst others, textes by Ramón del Valle-Inclán, Francisco Villaespesa, Joaquín Dicenta, Federico García Lorca and José Díaz Fernández.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

  • Critical and informed knowledge of literary movements in contemporary Spain and their relationship with society.
  • The command of those analytical procedures which shall allow a critical reading and an informed production of scholarly works.
  • The rhetorical competence needed to present a paper with the results of personal research.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

General knowledge of the history of Western literature and methods of literary analysis. Level B2 in Spanish language.
The purchase of a Spanish copy of Luces de bohemia, by Ramón del Valle-Inclán, ideally the critical edition published by Espasa-Calpe (col. Austral) or Cátedra.

Recommended or required readings

An anthology of texts will be available at the begining of the course (on eCampus).

Assessment methods and criteria

Written exam (80%) and oral discussion (20%) about an extra book chosen between the student and the profesor.
