Learning unit contents

The learning unit is a practical application of the learning unit "[GEOG2033-1] Spatial development". The learning unit is divided into two main parts:
1. European regional policies   1.1. European regional policies before 2013   1.2. European regional policy 2014 - 2020
2. Unequal development of European territories   2.1. Analytical tools to analyse and understand territorial disparities   2.1.1. Actors of the European territorial governance   2.1.2. The « Chorématique » method   2.1.3. The « Electre » method   2.2. Territorial disparities and development policies in a European country

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

On the basis of the learning unit, the student will be able:

  • to observe, describe, understand, model and built hypothesizes on regional disparities within a country, on the basis of texts, statistics and spatial data sets he will have gathered;
  • to understand and to review territorial development strategies, to link them with the theory, to identify territorial needs, to identify territorial actors and their interactions;
  • to use appropriated tools in order to analyse, model and represent regional disparities ;
  • to position itself as an expert of territorial issues.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

General knowledge of the European territory, the European history and the European institutions Basic statistical analysis, cartography, basic design software Passive knowledge of English

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The learning unit alternates theoretical lectures, methodological seminars, individual work, group work, oral presentations and individual and collective follow-up.
Two main learning activities are planned:

  • Development and oral presentation of a synthetic presentation on the 2014 - 2020 European regional policy (group work). The presentation is the subject of a collective formative evaluation.
  • Preparation of an expert report on regional disparities and development policies in a European country. The report and its presentation will be evaluated by the supervisor (final score of the learning unit).

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

The learning unit includes mandatory sessions, non-mandatory follow-up and personal work.

Assessment methods and criteria

The global grade of the learning unit is based on the assessment of the expert report. The evaluation of the expert report and its oral presentation is based on a specific evaluation framework presented on the first course. Assessment criteria are the research quality, the report quality and the oral presentation quality.
