Learning unit contents
Do we consider urban anthropology situational or merely situated ? Old question, which need be refreshed with more urban fieldwork, in the present case, in Liège. Then, questions in the field, which may vary from year to year. For example: on urban euphoria and dysphoria, on walking as a mode of urban transportation, etc. As we proceed, methods of urban anthropology are questioned and refreshed as well.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
To reinforce a good command of urban-specific methods of fieldwork, based on Thibaut and Grosjean's book, /L'espace/ /urbain en méthodes/ (only available in French), and a short piece of urban fieldwork. A side effect is sought after: to rediscover the pleasure to be in town.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
A good idea of what the Chicago School is all about; good capacity for developing a resistance to cold and tireness due to the long hours of urban walking.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
fieldwork in the city of Liège, framed by a general question submitted by the teacher.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
Three 10-hour modules are the backbone of the course; a module every month and ten hours on a two-day blocked period. Classes alternatively offer theory-based presentations and urban wanderings.
