Learning unit contents

To address the growing heterogeneity of class groups, the Pact for Excellence in Education calls for teaching practices to incorporate differentiated instruction and personalised support.

This course prepares students to design and implement such approaches, in particular during their placement. In this respect it extends the "Managing learner heterogeneity" courses.

The course is organised around several complementary strands:

1. a practical strand (placement and practice-analysis seminars),

2. a pedagogical strand (personalised support, and the teacher's collaborative work through co-teaching and co-intervention),

3. and a disciplinary and didactic strand.

This syllabus concerns the disciplinary and didactic strand (geography):

it applies the intended learning outcomes to the field of geography and its didactics.

For the disciplinary and didactic strand - table of contents (indicative):

Differentiation in geography: adapting tasks, materials and scaffolding to pupils' prior learning and needs.

Spatial learning.

Drawing on geospatial technologies, including geovisualisation, as levers for differentiation.

Pupils' identification of the links between spatial components.

Pupils' communication using representations of space.

Links with the placement: trying out and analysing differentiated approaches.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

design and implement differentiated instruction and personalised pupil support that takes account of pupils' prior learning and learning needs, in particular in connection with the disciplinary and didactic content of this course.

These outcomes contribute in particular to developing the following competences:

Mastering disciplinary content, its epistemological foundations, its scientific and technological development, its didactics and the methodology for teaching it (3a);

Designing and implementing differentiated instruction and personalised pupil support that takes account of pupils' prior learning, their learner profile and, where applicable, their specific needs, drawing in particular on co-teaching or pedagogical co-intervention (3e iv).

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Completion of the "Managing learner heterogeneity" courses.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course favours active learning, in keeping with what it prepares students to implement.

The specific arrangements for each session may be adjusted to suit the group and will be communicated as the course progresses on MyUliège or eCampus.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face course

Further information:

Face-to-face.

The close link with the placement and the collaborative nature of the approaches do not lend themselves well to distance learning. Presentation materials will nonetheless be posted on MyUliège or eCampus.
