Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course focuses on the topic "Listening Comprehension in the Teaching of German as a Foreign Language" and combines advanced language development with pedagogical reflection.

The main areas covered include:

  • the importance of listening comprehension in foreign language learning,
  • the analysis of specific difficulties associated with understanding spoken language,
  • the study of different pedagogical approaches (in particular content-focused and form-focused approaches),
  • the development of listening-comprehension exercises and the pedagogical rationale underpinning them,
  • the planning, implementation and reflection on teaching situations in the context of microteaching sessions,
  • the writing of an academic paper in foreign-language teaching methodology.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The overall aim of the course is to enable students to develop both:

  • their pedagogical skills in teaching listening comprehension in German as a foreign language (DaF),
  • their language skills in academic German.
Knowledge:
By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • explain the key theoretical concepts relating to listening comprehension in German as a foreign language (DaF),
  • systematically analyse comprehension problems,
  • critically compare different pedagogical approaches.
Practical skills:
By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • independently design a pedagogically sound teaching sequence,
  • develop appropriate listening-comprehension exercises,
  • justify their choices on a theoretical basis,
  • write a structured and well-argued academic text.
Professional attitudes:
By the end of the course, students should develop:

  • a reflective and critical approach to their own teaching practice,
  • the ability to incorporate feedback constructively,
  • an active approach to their professional development.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Participation in the course requires a minimum B2 language level in both German and French, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The course builds on the German courses already completed at university college and university level and complements them by adding a pedagogical and academic perspective.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The activities combine different methodological approaches, including:

  • the analysis of academic texts,
  • the completion of structured questionnaires,
  • the writing of specialised texts,
  • the development of teaching materials,
  • the practical application of pedagogical concepts in microteaching situations.
Particular emphasis is placed on maintaining a continuous link between theory and practice and on reflecting on learning experiences and pedagogical decisions.

The course is structured in several progressive stages:

  • introduction to the topic and course organisation,
  • theoretical study of listening comprehension,
  • analysis of comprehension difficulties,
  • development of the pedagogical foundations,
  • development of a teaching sequence,
  • pedagogical rationale,
  • practical implementation through microteaching sessions,
  • final reflection and writing of an academic report.

Further information:

The course includes both continuous and final assessment, based on the report to be written. Particular attention is paid to the connection between theory and practice.

All assignments must be submitted on time and in accordance with the instructions provided.

Assessment criteria for the academic report:

  • quality of content and theoretical grounding,
  • coherence and quality of the teaching unit,
  • analysis of the microteaching session,
  • quality of academic writing and argumentation,
  • formal presentation and completeness,
  • transparency regarding the use of AI tools.
If a student fails the first examination session (a minimum mark of 10/20 is required), an oral resit examination is organised during the second examination session. This examination will focus on the work that needs to be improved.
