Learning unit contents

In light of the growing diversity of learner groups, the "Pacte pour un Enseignement d'excellence" encourages the implementation of teaching practices based on differentiation and personalized support. As part of this course unit, students will be guided to apply and experiment with these approaches in their professional practice, particularly during their internships.

The course thus aims to enable students to identify learners' needs, adapt their instructional approaches, and implement differentiation strategies that promote participation, learning, and success for every student.

It builds upon the course "Managing Learner Diversity" from bloc 3 and serves as a practical extension of that course.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to analyse, critically evaluate and improve teaching and learning approaches in order to address the diversity of learners' profiles and needs.

You will also be able to design and implement practices of differentiated instruction and personalised support, taking into account learners' prior knowledge and skills, their individual learning profiles and, where appropriate, their specific educational needs. These practices may notably draw on co-teaching and collaborative teaching approaches.

Analyse

  • Identify and categorise learners' errors (lexical, grammatical, pragmatic, strategic, etc.).
  • Analyse learners' work and performance in order to identify their difficulties and learning needs.
  • Formulate hypotheses about the causes of errors and learning difficulties (interference, overgeneralisation, inappropriate strategies, etc.).
  • Use assessment data as a basis for diagnosing learners' needs and learning progress.
Design

  • Design differentiated lessons, sequences and activities adapted to diverse learner profiles.
  • Develop remedial activities addressing identified difficulties and learning needs.
  • Design enrichment activities to support and challenge learners who have already mastered the targeted skills.
  • Integrate, where appropriate, co-teaching or collaborative teaching approaches into your teaching practices.
Implement

  • Use assessment as a diagnostic tool to adapt your teaching and support learners' progress.
  • Implement differentiated instruction and personalised support as part of your teaching placement.
  • Adapt your teaching practices in response to learners' needs and observed progress.
Reflect and Adjust

  • Critically analyse your own pedagogical choices and teaching practices.
  • Evaluate the impact of the approaches and activities implemented on learners' learning and progress.
  • Identify the strengths, limitations and areas for improvement of your teaching practices.
  • Adjust your teaching practices in response to the results observed and the needs of your learners.

Further information:

Additional Information The final grade is based on two equally weighted components.

  • Continuous assessment carried out throughout the course accounts for 50% of the final grade,
  • while the individual project completed in connection with the long-term teaching placement accounts for the remaining 50%.
Detailed guidelines and assessment requirements for all expected assignments are available in the course's online learning environment. You are expected to consult these guidelines carefully and submit all required work in accordance with the specified requirements and deadlines.

If the final grade is below 10/20, you will be required to take an oral examination during the second examination session.

Work placement(s)

Several course activities are to be completed as part of the long internship.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

Students are encouraged to bring their own laptop to class so that they can work directly with the documents available on eCampus and access the Internet when required for certain activities.
