Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course content corresponds to the reading packs and teaching materials covering the following two themes:

  • Pedagogical planning incorporating diagnostic differentiation measures
  • Language norms, error diagnosis and correction, personalised feedback

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The course aims to enable students, as future teachers, to address different forms of heterogeneity among their target learners by planning differentiated and personalised learning activities.

The course's specific objectives relate to three areas:

Knowledge:

By the end of the course, students are able to:

  • understand the pedagogical concepts relating to differentiation, error diagnosis and personalised feedback;
  • explain how these concepts can contribute to managing heterogeneity in foreign-language teaching;
  • understand the content of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles Modern Languages Reference Framework (S3, German, first and second foreign language);
  • understand error typologies and interlanguage levels in the learning of German as a foreign language;
  • explain the fundamental principles of constructive feedback.
Skills:

By the end of the course, students are able to:

  • formulate learning objectives on the basis of learner profiles and proficiency levels in the Modern Languages Reference Framework;
  • plan differentiated learning activities;
  • diagnose the types of errors made by students in written work;
  • provide constructive feedback;
  • propose personalised support measures on the basis of diagnostic information;
  • justify their pedagogical choices by drawing on appropriate theoretical concepts.
Attitudes:

By the end of the course, students are able to:

  • regard students' errors as an inherent part of foreign-language learning and address them accordingly in their teaching practice;
  • focus feedback on learners' performance rather than on their personality;
  • given the limited empirical evidence, develop realistic expectations regarding differentiation and personalisation.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

B2 level (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) in German and French

Course on Pedagogical Management of Learner Heterogeneity in Lower Secondary Classes (ULiège, B3)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course learning activities alternate and combine theoretical input and a variety of practical exercises applying differentiation and personalisation approaches. The course requires regular and active participation in the proposed activities. Activities are carried out mainly in pairs and individually. Opportunities for whole-group discussion are also provided.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face course

Continuous assessment

Further information:

Continuous assessment during the course accounts for 50% of the final grade. The individual project carried out in connection with the extended placement also accounts for 50% of the final grade.

Continuous assessment during the course includes:

  • a test assessing students' understanding of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles Modern Languages Reference Framework;
  • the planning of two differentiated teaching sequences on the topic of AI, together with answers to reflection questions;
  • two detailed and substantiated analyses of AI-generated student texts.
The individual project includes the planning of a differentiated teaching sequence and an activity focusing on the production and correction of a piece of student writing, with personalised feedback.

Detailed instructions for all required assignments are available in the online course space. These assignments must be completed in accordance with the instructions and deadlines communicated. A final grade below 10/20 results in an oral examination during the second examination session. This examination will focus on the work that needs to be improved.

Work placement(s)

Students are encouraged to apply what they have learned during their extended teaching placement.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

Students are asked to bring their own laptop to class so that they can work directly with the documents made available on eCampus and access the Internet for certain activities.
