The course aims to develop an understanding of the epistemological foundations, methods, and historical evolution of the sciences by examining the conditions under which scientific knowledge is produced, validated, and transformed.
The course will cover the following topics (non-exhaustive list):
- epistemology of science
- major schools of thought in theories of knowledge
- problematisation
- factors leading to problematisation
- history of science
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of this module, students will be able to :
- design science teaching and learning sequences that present an image of science, its development and its distinctive features in line with the current paradigm
- design science teaching and learning sequences that incorporate elements relating to the history of science
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Knowledge of the subject-specific content set out in the common core curriculum framework for for science primary education
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is structured around a combination of practical activities carried out by the students (for example: document analysis, analysis of teaching and learning sequences, designing activities, etc.) and lectures by the tutor.
The practical activities offered during the course will sometimes be carried out individually and sometimes in groups.
