Learning unit contents
Building on what they have learnt in the courses ZENS0098 Subject-Specific Teaching Methodology: Social Sciences (Part I), HSTG0101 Social Sciences Teaching Placement (Part I) and HSTG0201 Social Sciences Teaching Placement (Part II), students compile three teaching portfolios.
Firstly, an improved version of the lesson on the set topic. This lesson, designed collaboratively during the ZENS0098 course, is trialled during Teaching Placements B. Following a group debriefing of Teaching Placements B, students will consult with one another to select the lesson plan they consider most satisfactory, making any necessary modifications or improvements where appropriate. This collaborative portfolio is submitted for assessment by a panel (see assessment criteria); subsequently, based on the panel's feedback, each student reviews the portfolio and makes the necessary amendments.
Secondly, a 'Citizenship' syllabus intended for sixth-form pupils at partner schools, where a three-day seminar is organised. Initially, students work in teams to draft one of the three chapters of the syllabus and devise assessment questions relating to the chapter's subject matter. Next, the three chapters are compiled and incorporated into a single document.
Thirdly, a pack containing five active research questions (or ARQs). These questions are used during Citizenship seminars. Their aim is to put sixth-form students in touch with organisations, associations, public services, etc., that are likely to provide assistance or intervene when a problematic situation arises in daily life, at work, within the family, etc. (e.g. access to housing, illness, car accidents, etc.).
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Following the collaborative and individual work involved in designing these three teaching resources, students demonstrate their ability, on the one hand, to produce teaching materials that support active learning and can be made available to a social sciences teacher and, on the other hand, to adopt a collaborative approach to the role of a teacher and to take part in collaborative work.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Knowledge and skills related to the previous stages of training in social sciences teaching.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course emphasises practical experimentation (the 'learning by doing' principle) and collaborative reflection. The tasks that students are required to complete are guided by the trainers' instructions. They are also based on the resources and guidelines set out in a syllabus.
The timetable for the 'Special Didactics in Social Sciences' sessions is set out as follows for the 2026-2027 academic year. Sessions begin at 1.30 pm and end at 4.30 pm. Attendance is compulsory: no absences will be accepted.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face-to-face course
Further information:
Face-to-face tutorial sessions. AFP (professional development workshops focusing on assessment and differentiation approaches, as well as the heteroscopic approach - analysis of video recordings of teaching practice during the Part-Tim 2 teaching placement).
Course materials and recommended or required readings
Written work / report
Further information:
A serious fail will be awarded to students who, on a repeated and unjustified basis, fail to attend course sessions or arrive late for them.
The student's performance is assessed on the basis of the three assignments they have written.
1°) The social sciences lesson plan, on a set topic (out of 50 marks)
The lesson plan on a set topic is assessed in two stages.
The guidelines for writing and assessing this assignment are set out in a note issued to students at the start of the academic year.
2°) The 'Citizenship' syllabus (out of 30 marks)
The student's performance is assessed on the basis of the quality of the chapter to which they have contributed.
The guidelines for writing and assessing this syllabus are set out in a note issued to students at the start of the academic year.
3°) Active research questions (ARQs) (worth 20 marks)
Active research questions are assessed on the basis of their relevance, feasibility and compliance with the presentation guidelines.
The guidelines for writing and assessing these ARQs are set out in a note issued to students at the start of the academic year.
Work placement(s)
The three dossiers (lesson on a prescribed theme; Citizenship syllabus; QRA) are closely linked to Teaching Placement B and Teaching Placement Part 2.
Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
Please note! The task of compiling the three portfolios is primarily the responsibility of the student, who must demonstrate that they are capable of working with the level of independence expected in their professional role.
The teaching team may be consulted in the event of a deadlock or significant uncertainty. In such cases, an individual meeting will be arranged - assistance cannot be provided through a 'simple' exchange of emails. The student should prepare specific questions or requests relating to a particular aspect of content or methodology. The teaching team will not respond to requests such as: 'Tell me what I should do' or 'What would you do in my place?'.
In addition to the compulsory appointment for drafting the QRA, each student may request a maximum of two appointments to discuss the three assignments (either one appointment per assignment, or two appointments for the lesson on a set topic, etc.).
