In this teaching module, tutors guide students through the process of preparing a social sciences lesson on a set topic.
The design of this lesson is based on the planning grid provided at the start of the course.
The design process follows the structure of this grid: at each stage, students are encouraged to work collaboratively, then to set out the results of their discussions in an individual written report.
At certain stages (identifying the key elements of the lesson; drafting the summary), practical exercises give students their first experience of a teaching situation (designing, delivering and assessing a learning sequence).
Each practical exercise is followed by a debriefing. Written feedback summarising the key points from the various debriefings carried out during a single class session is presented at the start of the following session. This feedback helps to clarify the content of the various stages involved in constructing a learning sequence, to identify likely obstacles, and to devise ways of overcoming any obstacles encountered.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Each student must demonstrate their ability to:
- engage with the set topic through literature reviews, meetings with subject matter experts, etc.;
- identify the learning needs that the lesson addresses;
- summarise the key elements of the lesson, i.e. what pupils should have mastered by the end of the lesson;
- draft summative assessment questions designed to assess pupils' mastery of these key elements;
- draft a problem-based scenario, the resolution of which will form the central theme of the learning sequence.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course emphasises practical experimentation (the 'learning by doing' principle) and collaborative reflection. The tasks that students are required to complete are guided by the trainers' instructions. They are also based on the resources and guidelines set out in a syllabus.
The timetable for the 'Special Didactics in Social Sciences' sessions is set out as follows for the 2026-2027 academic year. Sessions begin at 1.30 pm and end at 4.30 pm. Attendance is compulsory: no absences will be accepted.

Attendance is mandatory during the social sciences didactics course work sessions.
Serious deficiency will be imposed on students who repeatedly and unjustifiably fail to attend class sessions or arrive late to class sessions. Only exceptional, duly justified absences will be excused. This requirement is also part of an apprenticeship in the professional obligations imposed on teachers (see Articles 14 and 15 of the Decree establishing the status of subsidized staff members in subsidized private education; Article 10 of the Decree establishing the status of subsidized staff members in subsidized official education).
Individual presentations will be assessed based on interim assignments (10 pts) and a written exam (30 pts).
Interim Assignments (10 pts) :
To be considered, these assignments must be submitted by the set deadline. Students are required to strictly adhere to these deadlines, otherwise they will be penalized with a zero mark for late submissions.
If none of the interim assignments are submitted by the specified deadlines, the overall mark for the interim assignments will be 0 out of 10.
Assignment content and deadlines:
1) A list of bibliographical and webographical references relating to the set topic. Deadline: Tuesday 6 October 2026, 12:00.
2) A note of no more than one page setting out the learning needs that the lesson on the set topic must address. Deadline: Tuesday 13 October 2026, 12:00.
3) A note of no more than one page summarising the key elements of the lesson, i.e. what the pupils for whom the lesson is intended should have understood by the end of the lesson. Deadline: Tuesday 13 October 2026, 12:00.
4) A note of no more than two pages setting out two examples of questions that can be used for the summative assessment of the learning outcomes of the pupils for whom the lesson is intended. Deadline: Tuesday 24 November 2026, 12:00.
5) A note of no more than four pages containing a problem situation, its solution and the steps required to reach that solution. Deadline: Tuesday 8 December 2026, 12:00.
Written examination (out of 30 marks):
The aim of this written examination is to assess your understanding of the process of preparing a social sciences lesson. This open-book written examination consists of three questions.
Work placement(s)
The approach is based on practical work and exercises carried out by and within the group of students in training.
The lesson on the assigned topic, designed collaboratively, is tested during teaching placement B.

Classes begin at 1:30 p.m.
The trainers will be available on Wednesday, September 16, from 1:30 PM, to answer questions regarding the practical organization of the training and to discuss potential adjustments to the program. Location: Office 1.90, Building B31, Sart Tilman.
