Learning unit contents
Building on Part I, this course aims to provide students with a deeper understanding of various contemporary issues related to teaching and pedagogical intervention in physical education.
Drawing on research findings, real-life situations from school settings, professional experiences, and the analysis of teaching practices, the course encourages students to develop pedagogical approaches that are responsive to student diversity and changes in society.
Particular attention is given to developing future teachers' ability to go beyond the mere teaching of motor skills and contribute to students' overall development, well-being, and long-term adoption of a healthy and active lifestyle.
Several topics are addressed, including:
- The relevant and thoughtful use of digital tools in physical education, including observation and analysis tools, feedback, assessment, monitoring of student learning, applications, and other digital technologies that can support teaching and learning.
- The management of emotions in physical education, for both students and teachers, and their impact on learning, motivation, engagement, and interpersonal relationships.
- Taking student diversity into account and adapting pedagogical approaches accordingly, particularly in relation to learning difficulties and disorders, special educational needs, and heterogeneous groups.
- Student motivation and engagement in physical and sporting activities, as well as strategies to support autonomy and active participation.
- The role of physical education teachers in promoting a healthy and active lifestyle, both within and beyond the school setting.
- The development of a reflective professional approach, enabling teachers to analyse their pedagogical choices, evaluate the effects of their teaching, and continuously adapt and improve their practices.
- Contemporary developments and challenges in physical education, as well as any other topics that may contribute to the professional development of future physical education teachers.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Building on Part I and the various pedagogical and practical training activities, this course aims to encourage students to draw on their knowledge and experience to analyse the situations they encounter, adapt their teaching approaches, and progressively develop a reflective professional practice.
This course pursues several objectives:
- To enable students to use digital tools in a relevant and thoughtful manner to support teaching, learning, observation, feedback, and assessment in physical education.
- To raise students' awareness of the role of emotions in teaching and learning situations and enable them to identify strategies for effectively managing emotions, both in students and in teachers.
- To enable students to better address student diversity, particularly learning difficulties and disorders and special educational needs, and to adapt their pedagogical approaches accordingly.
- To enable students to identify and implement strategies that foster students' motivation, engagement, autonomy, and sense of competence.
- To strengthen students' understanding of the role of physical education teachers in promoting health, well-being, and the long-term adoption of a healthy and active lifestyle, both within and beyond the school setting.
- To enable students to understand the relationships between physical activity, sedentary behaviours, health, and well-being, and to integrate these issues into their teaching practice.
- To develop students' ability to analyse their pedagogical choices, evaluate the effects of their interventions, and identify ways to improve their professional practice.
- To raise students' awareness of contemporary developments and challenges in physical education and encourage them to continuously adapt their practices based on scientific evidence and professional knowledge.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
This course draws on concepts covered throughout the students' training and also builds on their practical experience.
All courses specific to the initial training programme in Physical Education/Movement Sciences provide a foundation upon which this course is built.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The sessions are organised in such a way as to combine a theoretical lesson with a seminar or practical workshop, allowing the course content to be illustrated and applied. Interactive activities are offered to establish a direct link between theoretical concepts and practical applications. Flipped-classroom sessions are also organised.
Students are strongly encouraged to keep their notes up to date as the course progresses and to draw on the course content in their practical experiences in the field.
