Cross-cutting support system for preparatory research work

The student will be required to participate in a series of cross-disciplinary seminars designed to support students through the various stages of the scientific research process as part of the preparation and completion of their dissertation. The seminars aim to develop the skills required to design, structure, write and present a research project. They address the requirements associated with the different sections of a research project, as well as the principles of scientific communication.

Participation in the cross-disciplinary support seminars is compulsory.

Successful completion of Travail Préparatoire à la Recherche (TPR) is conditional upon compliance with the participation requirements for these seminars. The organisational, participation and validation arrangements applicable to the first and second examination sessions are described in the "Assessment methods and criteria" section.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

  • Formulate a research question that is sufficiently precise and assess its relevance;
  • Consult and summarize the literature related to the topic;
  • Formulate research hypotheses;
  • Propose a draft methodology;
  • Identify the types of data to be collected and how they will be processed;
  • Assess the feasibility (including ethical considerations) of the research.

Cross-cutting support system for preparatory research work

The cross-disciplinary support programme primarily aims to help students develop the skills required to prepare and conduct a research project. In particular, it aims to enable students to:

  • explore relevant scientific literature and critically appraise it;
  • structure and integrate knowledge derived from the scientific literature;
  • develop a research problem and formulate research questions and, where appropriate, hypotheses;
  • present and justify the research methodology and address the ethical aspects of the research project.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Meetings with the advisor and/or supervisor will help the students to define their research problem, formulate objectives and, where appropriate, hypotheses, and determine the appropriate methodology.

IMPORTANT: The formulation of the research question and the methodology specific to the dissertation, as well as the definition of the various deadlines for the progress of the work, remain the responsibility of the student, under the supervision of the advisor.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written work / report

Continuous assessment

Out-of-session test(s)

Further information:

A written assignment as specified in the Research Preparation Work regulations. This "Travail Préparatoire à la Recherche" (TPR) is graded by the supervisor in the first or second session. A grade of 10/20 or higher is automatically awarded and the credits associated with the research preparation work (TPR) are therefore earned.

The supervisor may, on an optional basis, organize an interview with the student to ask them about certain aspects of their work. This exchange, if it takes place, is an integral part of the assessment, in the same way as the written work.

Participation in the cross-disciplinary support programme

Participation in the cross-disciplinary support seminars is compulsory.

Successful completion of the "Travail Préparatoire à la Recherche" (TPR) is conditional upon compliance with the participation requirements for these seminars. The organisational, participation and validation arrangements applicable to the first and second examination sessions are as follows:

First examination session:

Attendance at the sessions is compulsory and will be recorded. One absence without justification is permitted during the academic year (one "joker").

An absence is considered justified if it is supported by a medical certificate or any other official document confirming that the student was unable to attend the session.

Students who exceed this permitted absence will not be authorised to submit their TPR during the first examination session.

Second examination session:

To meet the requirements for the second examination session, students must watch the podcasts made available to them and complete the associated tests. Completion of all these activities is compulsory in order to be authorised to submit the TPR during the second examination session.

These arrangements will be reiterated during the first seminar of the academic year.
