Placement

The Master's internship is a personal experience that gives students the opportunity to apply what they have learned to real-world situations by working in the field under supervision.

This internship allows students to explore various aspects of professions that require professionals to describe, analyze, and interpret educational and training situations within their specific contexts, drawing on conceptual frameworks from the interdisciplinary field of educational sciences.

As part of the EFE field placement, students are encouraged to apply their theoretical and methodological knowledge in context to implement training programs and initiatives,

  • by applying, from design through evaluation, scientific and technological knowledge relevant to the target contexts and audiences;
  • by fostering a supportive learning environment;
  • taking into account individual and collective dynamics of development;
  • being attentive to learning difficulties;
  • being attentive to collective challenges
  • by continuously evaluating their actions to improve them, particularly through the collection of field data;
  • when necessary, by working with partners to develop relevant learning programs;
  • by communicating and collaborating in an appropriate, respectful, and constructive manner, depending on the context, with various partners (participants as well as sponsors, stakeholders, etc.)
  • ultimately focusing on creating conditions conducive to the well-being, development, and learning of the target audience;
  • while remaining mindful of the social issues specific to education and training contexts.
Students complete their internship (and therefore register for it):

  • either as part of a research team in the Faculty of Psychology, Speech-Language Pathology, and Educational Sciences;
  • or within an institution capable of hosting an intern and offering them an activity related to the professions that involve teaching, training, and/or educating.
An internship supervisor will be designated within the selected organization.

The internship will be guided and supervised by an academic advisor from the Department of Educational Sciences at the FPLSE (or co-supervised with an academic or researcher from another faculty or department), generally with the assistance of a teaching assistant or a doctoral student.

The academic supervisor of the internship is responsible for defining their expectations regarding the organization and educational content of the internship (prerequisites, duration, content, assessment methods, etc.) in a tripartite internship agreement, which therefore requires consultation among the student, the internship supervisor, and the academic supervisor of the internship.

Seminar

Students must attend 15 hours of compulsory "internship support seminars"

Three cross-disciplinary seminars (total: 9 hours) will be organised during the academic year. They will cover the following topics:

  • Presentation, objectives and organisation of the internship
  • The internship report: how to demonstrate the development
    of skills gained during the internship in a written report?
  • Critical incidents: analysis of real-life situations
These seminars will bring together students from all three career pathways (EFE, ASC, CCD).

In addition, each academic coordinator will organise so-called 'field-specific' seminars (total: 6 hours) aimed at providing students with more specific support based on their chosen placement field. The format of these seminars may vary from one academic coordinator to another. Each academic coordinator will inform their students.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Placement

The overall objective of the internships is to provide the intern with situations in which they can appropriately apply the knowledge, skills, and professional attitudes acquired during their academic program.

As part of the EFE internship, students will be expected to develop skills such as:

Implementing and analyzing effective teaching and training programs,

  • by applying, from design through implementation, scientific and technological knowledge relevant to the target contexts and audiences
  • by fostering a positive learning environment
  • by continuously evaluating their actions to improve them, particularly through the collection of field data.
Justifying the relevance of proposed actions and the evaluation/adaptation of actions undertaken, which involves:

  • describing the elements of these situations, situating them in their context, and explaining their interactions at various levels of the system; while distinguishing between descriptive, interpretive, and prescriptive approaches.?
  • examining one's actions in light of the specific context in which they occur and the theoretical foundations on which they are based.
  • as needed, adapting one's actions and analyses to contexts involving educational or training challenges and to the age of the individuals affected by these challenges.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Placement

The course "Master Thesis Preparation: Project Design and Research Ethics" (PEDA4065-1) is a prerequisite for internships.

Each internship proposal may also have its own prerequisites (see the Excel list provided by the academic advisors).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Placement

The purpose of the internship is to apply and develop skills in a professional setting. Students are therefore expected to be physically present at the internship site for at least 90 hours. However, preparatory or follow-up activities may also take place outside the internship site.

Students must attend the accompanying internship seminars concurrently with their internship period in order to integrate what they have learned in the field with the supervision sessions offered during the seminars.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Placement

Face-to-face course

Further information:

The internship will take place, for a minimum of 90 hours, directly at the workplace, with additional work to be carried out at home (or elsewhere, as agreed with the internship supervisor) in addition to these 90 hours.

Internship support seminars are held exclusively in person.

Additional information:

  • Students are required to complete a 180-hour internship, at least 90 hours of which must be spent in the workplace.
  • Students must complete the number of internship hours specified in the internship registration form. Credit for the number of internship hours is granted at the end of the internship based on the work actually performed and confirmed by the internship supervisor.

Recommended reading lists may be provided by the various instructors in charge. Materials for the seminars accompanying the internship could be shared with the students.

All information will be shared via an eCampus course entitled "Stages".

Placement

Written work / report

Other : Oral

Further information:

The assessment will be carried out by the academic supervisor, who will base their assessment on the internship report provided by the student and take into account the assessment submitted by the internship supervisor.

In some cases, the academic supervisor may request an oral interview (a discussion about the placement report), if they so wish.

Practical details regarding the internship report will be provided during the internship support seminars.

For more information, students are also encouraged to refer to the faculty regulations.

Internships are offered only once per academic year. The grade is taken into account during the grading process for the current academic year (see Academic and Examination Regulations).
