Learning unit contents

Animal production is a set of scientific disciplines (genetics, nutrition, ecology, ethology, ethnography, ...) that study the conditions and methods of breeding and reproduction in domestic animals (livestock and pets), as well as the improvement of their breeds.

Animal ethnography is the discipline dedicated to studying, describing, and classifying species and breeds of domestic animals. This discipline relies on characterizing morphological, genetic, and production-related traits, enabling the identification of the principal breeds developed through human selection. Its central aim is to elucidate the functional purpose underlying each breed-whether oriented toward production, companionship, sport, or leisure.

This course provides a systematic overview of breed diversity across the main categories of domestic animals. For livestock species (equines, ruminants, swine, poultry, and rabbits), herd composition data from Belgium, France, UK and Germany will serve as the primary reference framework. For companion animals (canines and felines), breeds will be presented according to group classifications established by the relevant international kennel and feline federations

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The students will be able to:

  • supply the essential elements allowing to define, for studied domestic animals, the breed about which they belong and to know the specificities of their use;
  • provide some notions of animal production which are essential to any veterinarian;
  • recognise the species and the breed of a domestic animal based on a picture.
