Learning unit contents

BSc course: Essential genomics for veterinarians and the animal sciences.

"Essential genomics for veterinarians and the animal sciences" provides a general introduction to the field of genomics applied to domestic animals.

The course comprises a total of five sections corresponding respectively to

Prerequisites I: Fundamentals in molecular biology of the gene

Prerequisites II: Fundamentals in genetics

Section I: Reference genomes

Section II: Individual genomes

Section III: Individual Phenomes

We will also cover some additional topics drawn from other chapters.

The focus will be on molecular genetics.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course, the student will be familiarized with:

  • The organisation and main features of the animal genome, sequencing technologies and methods used for the annotation of reference genomes.
  • Basic concepts in population and evolutionary genomics including the different types of genetic variants, the origins of genetic polymorphism, the notion of linkage disequilibrium and haplotype blocks, the main genotyping methods, the methods used for the reconstruction of our evolutionary history and of animal domestication.
  • An understanding of how variation in the genome contributes to health and disease in animals, including Mendelian traits and cancer.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

1. Basic knowledge in molecular biology of the gene (structure of DNA/RNA/proteins, replication, transcription, translation, mitosis, meiosis) and mendelian genetics (Mendel's laws, dominance, recessivity, linkage)

2. Basic knowledge in probability and statistics (mean, variance, covariance, correlation).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course includes 28 hours of lectures (Prerequisites I & II: 6 hours; Chapter I: 6 hours; Chapter II: 6 hours; Chapter III: 8 hours; 2 hours of "additional information"), as well as 10 hours of tutorials.

During the tutorials, students will receive supplementary materials to help them better understand the theory, multiple-choice questions (MCQs) to assess their understanding of the theory, and problems (exercises) related to sections 1 through 4 of the course. They will work under the supervision of a teaching assistant (Harris-Barthélemy Vassart). The lab sessions will be conducted in a hybrid format: online and in person.

Attendance at the tutorials is mandatory.

In the event of an unexcused absence from a tutorial, the student will not be allowed to take the online test, which accounts for 10% of the final grade.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face course

Course materials and recommended or required readings

Platform(s) used for course materials:
- eCampus
- MyULiège

Further information:

The course will be divided into several sections, including Prerequisites I and II, followed by Section 1 on reference genomes, Section 2 on individual genomes, and Section 3 on individual phenomes. An additional sections will also cover several key concepts, knowledge points, and skills necessary for animal genetics. Course slides will also be available on the eCampus platform and will be made available gradually as the course progresses. Lecture notes will be included in the slides to facilitate understanding of the various concepts covered.

The course textbook, *Essential Genomics for Veterinarians and the Animal Sciences* by Michel Georges, can be downloaded from the ULiège eCampus website and from GIGAUAG - Teaching; this book may be consulted as needed to provide additional information and to explore certain concepts in greater depth.

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire )

Written work / report

Further information:

All sessions combined
- In-person
written assessment (multiple-choice questions, open-ended questions)

Assignment - report
Additional information:

A test will be administered during the tutorial week. Students must log in at a specific time on eCampus and answer questions covering the following sections of the course: Prerequisites I & II, Chapter 1: Reference Genomes, and Chapter 2: Individual Genomes.

The test will cover all theoretical and practical aspects of the course.

In the event of an unexcused absence from the tutorial, the student will not be allowed to take the online test, which accounts for 10% of the final grade.
