Pratique de la langue anglaise (English)
Contents:
- Practical comprehension and listening exercises and note-taking based on authentic recorded material in UK and US English.
- Practical comprehension exercises in reading texts with different contents, summary, critical comment, lexical and cultural exploitation.
- Practical exercises based on video and tv shows used in class.
- Writing exercises based on materials used in class.
- Exercises on word definition, concepts and paraphrasing.
- Initiation to anglophone cultures through the texts and material discussed in class.
Initiation à la traduction de l'anglais vers le français
To ensure the course is as effective as possible, the number of ERASMUS students who can enrol on this course is limited. Furthermore, it will not always be possible for students to choose which group they wish to enrol in.
An introductory session will take place on Tuesday 15 September from 3.30 pm to 5.30 pm (room L5 2/5). ERASMUS students wishing to take this course are asked to attend this session to confirm their enrolment.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of the year, students will be able to:
- summarise and critically comment on texts and digital material with various styles and contents (to develop one's ability to synthesize, criticize and analyze)
- define certain words from the text, find their synonyms, antonyms and summarise paragraphs.
- understand authentic audiovisual material
- be at ease with the Anglophone vocabulary and cultural elements required to understand written and audiovisual material discussed in class (history, politics, economics, a range of socio-cultural material, news, ...)
-do research to understand the cultural references mentioned in the texts and listening comprehensions analyzed in class (to develop personal research skills)

Good command of the English language, with the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary necessary to understand and criticize complex texts.
Good grasp of oral English so as to understand authentic audiovisual material.

Pratique de la langue anglaise (English)
Participating in debates and oral exercises in class is compulsory. Learning is based as much on personal research and individual preparation of textual and audiovisual materials as on collective work in class.
All assignments must be done at home before coming to class to ensure the quality of the lessons.

- Audiovisual aids for listening comprehension exercises will be provided in class by the instructors.

January Assessment (35%)
Written examination, covering the material from the first semester, including a summary of an unseen text and/or questions relating to the topics covered during the first semester and texts not discussed in class. If the student does not obtain a grade of 10/20 or higher, the January assessment must be retaken in June.
June Assessment (70% or 100% in the event of failure in January)
- Written examination (35%) based on the material from the second semester, including a summary of an unseen text and/or questions relating to the topics covered during the first semester, including texts not discussed in class.
- In the event of failure in January: the January examination must be retaken according to the procedures and criteria described above: January Assessment (35%).
All documents distributed in class, including materials not discussed in class, are part of the examination material.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
- Students will be required to answer questions about the assigned readings. Preparation and documentary research are essential: students must be able to define terms, expressions or names appearing in the text, paraphrase certain passages, establish connections between different passages, or draw links between elements of the texts and the course content.
- Students are also expected to have information about the authors of the texts.
- Students must use key words and concepts (in particular those covered in class) in their answers.
- Students must bring a paper copy of all the assigned readings to the oral examination and, ideally, these should be annotated. Handwritten notes are also permitted (no electronic devices are allowed).
The procedures for the second examination session are identical to those for June.
This course is part of a teaching unit that is subject to the absorbing grade principle, which means that if a grade below 8/20 (i.e. 7 or lower) is obtained in one of the learning activities (LA), that grade becomes the overall grade for the teaching unit. Only the examination corresponding to the failed LA will be retaken in the second examination session.
