  • Verbal moods and tenses (conjugation, uses and scopes, diversity of meanings, agreement of tenses);

  • Common spelling and typography;

  • Punctuation;

  • Grammatical spelling.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

"The student will be able to perform a correct and rigorous grammatical analysis of a word, a sentence, and a text, using the reference terminology in force in French-speaking Belgian education (cf. Terminology Code). They will be able to grasp and explain the values of verbal moods and tenses, to grasp the differences and nuances of meaning attached to them, and to identify the errors that their misuse generates. Finally, they will have a thorough knowledge of the spelling rules of the French language."

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

No prerequisite knowledge, but C1 level for non-native speakers.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Duration and period: 60 hours (30 hours of grammar and 30 hours of spelling).

Organisation: The course is taught by F. Neven (grammatical analysis module: content covered in sections 1 and 2, and spelling module), by E. Voidanidis, and by C. Leveau (spelling module: content covered in sections 3 and 4).

Teaching schedule and location: The class is divided into two groups. By the end of the academic year, both groups will have completed the two modules in their entirety (grammar and spelling).

The grammar module will be taught during the first semester according to the following schedule:

  • Group 1: Monday, 12:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.; ULiège, TI campus, rue de Pitteurs, L5 2.8 (Danica Seleskovitch room);
  • Group 2: Wednesday, 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. (ULiège, place du XX-Août, Hena Maes-Jelinek room - Grand Physique lecture hall).
*Groups will be formed during the first class, on Wednesday, 16 September 2026. Exceptionally, all students are required to attend the first grammar class (Wednesday, 16 September).

The spelling module (F. Neven, E. Voidanidis and C. Leveau) will be taught during the second semester (the schedule and classrooms will be communicated in December).

Teaching and learning methods:

The course is exercise-based (Wooclap, e-Campus, syllabus). All exercises are accompanied by theoretical explanations provided by the instructor and presented in the reference grammar books (1).

At the end of each class, for each module (grammar or spelling), students may be offered a test covering the material taught during that class. These mini-tests will enable students to earn, before the examination session, up to 6 points out of 20. Depending on their level of difficulty, the tests will be worth between 0.5 and 2 points.

These mini-tests may take the form of a dictation, a short presentation, an open-ended question or a multiple-choice questionnaire (MCQ).

Attendance is recommended. Attending classes attentively will enable students to earn up to 6 points per module before the June examination session.

It is important to note that, on the one hand, these tests are entirely optional and, on the other hand, that not taking them does not disadvantage students in any way.

Consequently, students who have not attended the classes in person and have not taken the corresponding tests will under no circumstances be allowed to take them at a later date, regardless of the reason given (illness, with or without a medical certificate, late arrival in the programme following a change of study programme, etc.). To ensure that students who are absent from class are not disadvantaged, the instructors have put in place an alternative arrangement, explained under the "Assessment" tab.

Finally, each of the three instructors teaching the spelling module (Module 2) is free to determine the frequency of the tests (a test at the end of each class or a longer test at the end of their four-class series).

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

In-person classes.

Additional information:

For all three examination sessions, the grade for Modules 1 and 2 is based on:

The grades obtained in the tests organised during classes. As a reminder, these tests are not compulsory. Students may choose to take only some of them or none of them.

The grade obtained through these tests will range from 0 to 6 points and may include one decimal place.

The grade obtained in the written examination held during the examination session. The written examination may include open-ended or closed questions (MCQs), a dictation, or a text to be corrected.

The written examination is marked out of 14 points. In order not to disadvantage students who have not taken the tests during the academic year (or who have chosen to take only some of them), the examination grade will be adjusted according to the tests completed. Thus, if a student has completed tests worth a total of 2 points, the examination grade (originally out of 14) will be converted to a grade out of 18.

The final grade for the AA will therefore be out of 20 points.

January examination session Written examination for the grammar module, including one or more MCQs and possibly open-ended questions. MCQs may use a +1/-0.5 marking scheme.

June examination session Written examination for the spelling module, including one or more MCQs, open-ended questions, a dictation, a text to be corrected and, where applicable, other exercises.

Written examination (second chance) for the grammar module (with the same examination format as in the January session).

Students who have not passed the grammar module in January (grade below 10/20) must take the written examination organised during the June examination session. Consequently, these students will be assessed on both modules of the Grammar course in June.

The final grade will correspond to the sum of the grades obtained for the grammar and spelling modules (examination grades and grades obtained in the tests taken during the course).

September examination session The arrangements are the same as those for the January and June sessions (grade obtained through the tests and examination grade). However, please note that the written examination will cover both modules of the course, according to the examination format defined for the June session.

The final grade will be calculated as follows: 50% grammar + 50% spelling, even if one of the two modules was passed in June or January.

Work placement(s)

No work placements.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
