Learning unit contents
An immersion internship in the professional or research world, within a company, government agency, organization, or other host institution where graduates of the Master's in Environmental Science and Management are likely to pursue their professional careers.
The internship allows students to gain professional experience, develop their soft skills, and apply the knowledge and skills acquired during their program in a professional setting.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of this course unit, students will be able to:
- understand the constraints, workings, and characteristics of work in a professional context by exploring a specific occupation, organization, and industry;
- to apply their technical and scientific knowledge and skills in a professional context;
- to develop and assess their soft skills, particularly their organizational skills, adaptability, initiative, ability to take responsibility, communication skills, and ability to manage interactions with others;
- to integrate into a professional organization, adhere to its rules, and contribute to collaborative work;
- to develop, when the internship activities allow, the ability to coordinate or lead teamwork;
- to adopt a responsible professional attitude, incorporating the ethical and professional standards specific to environmental professions;
- to refine their career plan by reflecting on their interests, aptitudes, skills, and career prospects;
- to carry out a job search process, from selecting a host organization to preparing an application and an interview.

!! The course is assessed specifically for each of the Master's in Environmental Science and Management specializations !! If you have any questions, please contact the supervisors for the different specializations.
For all programs, the assessment consists of:
- Assessment grid (1/3 of the points): by the internship supervisor only.
- Technical report (1/3 of the points): mainly by the academic supervisor + possibly also by the internship supervisor. For some programs, the technical report is accompanied by a defense (to be discussed with the supervisors of the different programs).
- Professional and personal report (1/3 of the points): mainly by the internship coordinator + possibly also by the academic supervisor.
The technical or practical report should describe the technical tasks carried out during the internship (maximum 10 pages).
What is usually expected as a "soft skills" report is feedback focusing on the individual (+/- 3 pages maximum). With questions such as:
- Why did I choose this internship?
- What strengths did I discover in myself?
- If there were any problems, did I resolve them in a manner befitting an environmental manager?
- How do I see my career prospects after this internship?
- ...
Work placement(s)
The student takes the initiative in researching and proposing their internship. The activities are then defined in consultation with the internship supervisor and approved by the academic advisor.
